Habitat Happenings | August 2018
Hello from our Executive Director
Dear Friend of Habitat,

Another month has gone by and so much has changed around the Habitat office and on our build sites. Home builds are wrapping up and we in the planning stages to start construction on our next home. We have welcomed a new staff member to the organization and another one is getting ready to depart. Some of our partner families are preparing to purchase a home for the first time in their life and other families are just starting their journey with us. Here are some more details:

Staffing Changes: We recently welcomed a new Family Services Coordinator to the team. Her name is Candy Hemmerling and she'll be supporting all of our families that inquire about or are approved into our housing programs. Her office hours are typically Monday-Thursday from 9:00am-4:30pm. If you'd like to welcome Candy to the Habitat family she can be reached at chemmerling@habitatlakeside.com or 920-458-3399 ext. 305. Just as soon as Candy started, our Volunteer Specialist, Caitlin Jurk notified us that she accepted an AmeriCorps position with another Habitat affiliate in Florida. We are so excited for Caitlin to pursue life after college in this role but will miss her positive attitude and energy around the office. Caitlin's last day at Habitat Lakeside is Tuesday, August 14. If you'd like to wish her farewell before she leaves, stop into our office or email her at cjurk@habitatlakeside.com.

Homeownership: On Thursday, July 19, we welcomed Michelle Neustel and her two children into their new home at 1612 North 10th Street. It was evident from Michelle's speech at her dedication how appreciative she is to all of the volunteers and donors who supported her home. Thank you!! Our next celebration will occur when we dedicate Shawn Genske's home at 507 Western Ave on Thursday, August 23 at 5:00pm. Please join me in congratulating Michelle and Shawn on their journey to homeownership!

New Families: Habitat for Humanity Lakeside's Board of Directors recently approved two new families into our Home Buyer Program. Talk about an exciting time for both families! Robin Taylor represents the first family. She has two young children, works long weekends and is currently taking classes at Lakeshore Technical College. Joel & Megan Bernal represent the second family. Together they have two children and are most looking forward to having more living space and a yard for their children to play in once their home is complete.

Sincerely,

Sarah Beckman

Meet our new Family Services Coordinator
Hi, I am Candy Hemmerling, the new Family Services Coordinator. I'm excited to work with all of our families throughout the entire home ownership process and after.

I come to Habitat Lakeside with a wide variety of experiences. I hold a master’s degree in counseling and a bachelor’s degree in psychology. I have been fortunate to have worked in some of the most interesting and rewarding positions including: crime victim advocate, self-sufficiency counselor, lecturer at the University of Minnesota, career center director, homeless case manager, Upward Bound director, and therapist.

I was raised on a farm in northern Wisconsin near Lake Superior. It is where my heart resides. Things I love to do in my personal life are bike riding, swimming, being anywhere in the woods, and making beautiful things out of colored glass. My favorite job ever is being a mom to my amazing son, Michael, who is 28 years old and lives in New York City. My newest favorite thing is working at Habitat for Humanity Lakeside doing work I love. I have some of the best co-workers!
A Farewell and Thank You from our Volunteer Specialist
Hello All,

I thought these pictures would be suitable to share as I am wrapping up my time here. The first photo was my first day with Habitat for Humanity Lakeside. I was learning how to fold a paper box! I have come a long way since then! As you can see from my second photo, I went from building boxes to helping build homes.

I just wanted to take this time to express my gratitude towards all of you! I have had the privilege to meet and work alongside many amazing and powerful volunteers, homeowners, and coworkers who truly have made my job not feel like a job.

I've grown so much in my past year with Habitat and I owe it to all of you. It has been a pleasure working with you all. I'll miss everything about it here (except the winters)!

Sincerely,

Caitlin Jurk

Volunteers Needed to Help Maintain Vacant Lots
Volunteers are needed to adopt and maintain some of our vacant lots. In the summer months this means visiting the lots to mow the lawn and pick-up any trash. In the winter months this means visiting the lots to clear the sidewalks of snow and ice. This is a great opportunity for a church youth group, high school or college student organization, family or individual. Lots can be adopted for summer, winter or year-round. If you are interested in adopting a lot, please contact loveinaction@habitatlakeside.com to inquire about lot locations.
