There are times when I have become aware that I have a lot of faith in God and maybe not so much in humanity. In encounters with many of you, you have echoed similar sentiments.
On Thursday, we will celebrate the Ascension of Christ, forty days after Easter. A few weeks ago, when we heard this story during Young and the Restless Chapel, we thought about the promises that God had made that were fulfilled in Jesus. We heard another promise given, that of the sending of the Holy Spirit. And, we learned that Jesus has great faith in us; so much that Christ "returns" to heaven.
Ascension reminds us that we have an important part to play in the remaking creation, that we are not to do this alone, and with the Holy Spirit's wisdom within us, God believes we will rise to the occasion.
|
The tapestry above of the Ascension hangs in a church in Pakistan. There is such richness in religious visual art.
At 10:30 am, not only will will celebrate the Ascension, but we will offer prayers for those who died in service to our country, whether in the armed forces, for civil rights, or for peace and justice.
At 5:00 pm, rather than having a reflection, we will engage in "Lectio Divina" during that time. The music will come from the Celtic tradition, as well as the prayers and poetry.
The notebooks from our Bowditch Buddies will be available again this week. They will be returned to the scholars on Tuesday, May 30th.
Please join us wherever you are in your search for meaning.

Colin Wiltberger Felt

Colin Wiltberger Felt
February 15, 1984 - May 13, 2017
Colin Wiltberger Felt, 33, of Arlington, MA (born and raised in Salem, MA) died Saturday, May 13, at his home in Arlington from a life-long battle with mental illness.
A true renaissance person, Colin is well known for his fathomless creativity. His writing, painting, baritone voice, and storytelling touched the hearts of all who knew him. The work he leaves behind will be a balm to his family and friends who will miss him always. Colin attended Phoenix School in Salem and was a graduate of Waring School in Beverly. He attended Salem State as a Tsongas Scholar, majored in Theatre Performance, and was very involved in the department there.
Colin is survived by his loving mother Helen Watson-Felt (Salem, MA), sister Caroline, sister-in-law Catherine Bertrand, nephew Gavin Rhys Watson-Bertrand, grand-mother Elisabeth Thomas of Georgetown, uncle Sam Watson, and cousins: Hannah Watson, Rosalie Moors, and Nina Watson of Calfornia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Colin be made to Grace Church in Salem.
Services will be held at 11am on Saturday, May 27 at Grace Church in Salem.

Christopher Patzke, inspired by Pauline Grady's creative use of materials for fans, decided that he wanted to purchase fans for the entire congregation. This is what is on each of them:
So if for any reason you might need to cool down during church (like during a rousing hymn!), please ask an usher for one of these wonderful fans, and thank you Christopher!
|
The Bowditch School scholars have written to us in their notebooks and now it is our turn to reply. They will be available Sunday at both services. Debbie will be returning them on Tuesday.

June 4th is the final day of Eastertide. Fifty days after Easter, as the faithful are gathered in that famous upper room, the Holy Spirit comes as tongues of flames to ignite a movement, the Jesus Movement. They no longer meet huddled together in the safety of this room, but go out into the world, proclaiming the just reign of God. We are direct descendants of those stirred up by this holy flame, and we too leave our safe places and go out to bring Christ's love to a broken world.
In celebration of this event, we traditionally wear red to remember the fire that still burns in our hearts. We sing hymns of praise to the Holy Spirit. And after being renewed and strengthened by the communion, we too go out into the world.
Let's get together and share our burning spirits, renewed by the Holy One.

From the Vestry:
Crawfish Boil Potluck
|
As was announced a few weeks ago, we have just passed the $10, 000 mark in our Garden of Life. Contributions to the Garden of Life go to building a sustainable future at Grace Church.
To celebrate this event, the Vestry is hosting a Potluck Lunch and Crawfish Boil at the Bailly's at 361 Essex Street from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm on June 4th. This is our chance to thank those who have made a commitment to the Garden of Life, and to enjoy one another's company on Pentecost.
The Vestry appreciates the Bailly's hospitality in hosting this event and hopes everyone can come. We look forward to sharing one another's dish at the Pentecost Day potluck (you don't necessarily need to bring red food; the crawfish covers that!). Let's celebrate our promise to work together to build Grace Church's future!
