   New Day

Greetings!

Happy 2012!

Another year is here but what a year 2011 was, especially for Gallery Helios as we celebrate our first birthday. It's been tremendous and wow, what an amazing group of practitioners and facilitators we have on board for this great adventure!

We will be hosting our Open House 11 March and we invite you to drop by for a visit and enjoy the day-long activities we have planned! And if you are still thumping your feet to the great music from our last party, come for our Food, Fun and Philanthropy Night for the benefit of Tana River Life Foundation. Amazing food as always from JAM and music for the soul from our musical friends Clara Chua and Ho Kah Keh.  Come meet Gabriel, the man with the plan, and you'll have your socks knocked off by the truly wonderful work he's doing over in Kenya.

Editor's Note

What can we say except that 2012 is going to be AMAZING! We have a lot of workshops in the works. We are excited to have some new modalities to share this year - truly transformative processes. To start, we are adding monthly Zen meditation for those who want to learn more about meditation. Our weekly Vipassana practice continues Tuesday evenings.

People have been asking for it... and now Antoinette will be offering a Dorn Self-Help Workshop to help those prone to spinal and muscle tensions. Knowing these simple exercises can really make a difference between pain and freedom.

For August we have invited Tim McLean to facilitate a workshop on the Enneagram and The Work of Byron Katie. Tim who is the head of the Enneagram Institute in Japan and a certified Bryon Katie facilitator, has been involved with psychology and spiritual practice for over 25 years.  The Enneagram is extremely interesting, with lots of information. Our Enneagram practitioner, Siew Fan, will be offering workshops between now and then to lay the groundwork for those new to what is essentially the map of the personality, ego and super-ego and how it plays a role in our spiritual journey.

In Tim's words "the Enneagram is one of the most comprehensive delineators of human psychology and spiritual potential we know" and for him, "The Work is simply the most direct way to Peace of Mind".

So what is possible with a workshop that combines both? Come find out!

2012 is a year of empowerment and we look forward to sharing with you techniques, processes and practices that will help us all access higher levels of ... whatever we desire.

The Work of Bryon Katie
The Work of Bryon Katie

"Life on the other side of inquiry is so simple and obvious that it can't be imagined before hand... there is such abundance here, now, always."

Byron Katie

Thoughts and beliefs drive our actions and the way we live. We attach ourselves to stressful thoughts, even if we suffer as a result, because we believe these beliefs to be true.

What if there is another way? If we can turnaround how we feel, go beyond our limitations and into abundance and peace of mind?

The Work of Bryon Katie is a simple, direct and yet transformative process that allows you to explore and discover your own answers. The "magic" anchors around four questions.

Is it true?

Can you absolutely know that it's true?

How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?

Who would you be without that thought?

On its own, the Work is a powerful and revolutionary process that opens up possibilities of freedom, and paired with another modality... WOW.

Gallery Helios will be offering a workshop combining the Work and the Enneagram this August.

Will you join us in accessing and anchoring clarity, joy and creativity never imagined before?

Meditation: An Introduction to the Zen Perspective
By Meditation Teacher Toby Ouvry

Cypress Tree

The Zen School of Meditation arose from a combination of the teachings of the Buddha with the teachings of Taoism in China during the 6th century AD, where it became known as Chan meditation ('Chan' meaning 'quietude'). Later it was adopted by the Japanese, and it is they who called it Zen.

What is Zen meditation?

With a simple and direct approach, this practice allows us to re-connect to our original mind, take a break from the information overload that characterizes modern living in order to access our innate intelligence, wisdom and compassion.

Zen meditation does not require you to accept beliefs without question and can be practiced by anyone, regardless of background and belief systems. The emphasis is experiential insight, method and process.

Pain in the Neck?
Self-help Dorn Method with Antoinette Biehlmeier

Dorn

The pain in the neck is, well, a pain. A major pain sometimes!

Most of us know too well that moment when we wake in the morning, ready and happy to start the day, only to realize that you can't move your neck - what a pain in the neck!

Days of restricted mobility, nights of shallow sleep, every subtle movement on the wrong side is breathtakingly painful... a good reason to stay in bed and wallow in self-pity.

How great would it be to have self-help exercises on hand that first of all help prevent stiff necks and aching backs and secondly support any ongoing therapy focusing on realignment and tension release?

The Dorn Method offers a short but effective routine of self-help exercises that aim to alleviate tension and over time allow a better alignment of the spine and joints. This results in flexibility of the whole body, higher energy levels and an increased sense of wellbeing... meaning less pain - fewer headaches, TMJ problems and back tensions.

5 basic exercises, less than 5 minutes twice a day will, if done on a regular basis, can alleviate a significant amount of tension and pain in our weak spots - the back, shoulders and the neck.

Now as much as I would like to give you a magic recipe - I can't - some commitment is needed to make this work. Why?

Our cells need 6 to 8 weeks to adjust to changes, and therefore some kind of constant reminder is needed during this time for the cells of the structural system to retain a new alignment.

By doing the self-help exercises at least twice a day for about 6 to 8 weeks, the cells of your structural system receive a continuous input on what a more optimized alignment would be and gradually adjust over time.

The results can be amazing and many people have been able to increase their quality of life by putting in a bit of an effort, dedication and determination for what seems to be a short time compared to months and years of pain.

Taking responsibility for your health, regaining control over your pain and enjoying a better life - enough reasons for you to try the Dorn Self-Help?

One more reason?

What about learning an absolutely amazing massage technique that totally relaxes the spinal muscles?!

Date: Saturday, 4 February 2012

Time: 10.00am - 1.30pm

Fees: S$150 (includes manual)

Please bring socks, a shirt that buttons down the front (for modesty) and a towel for the massage.

Who Am I? enneagram
Enneagram: Am I My Personality?

The Enneagram is a map that helps us understand the structure of our personality, our ego and our super-ego. It also more importantly, helps us to answer the question "Who am I?" and "What am I doing here?".

Many coaches, corporate trainers and self-development teachers use the Enneagram to profile or type people, and while the Enneagram can accurately do that, that is not the best use of it.

The Enneagram helps us liberate ourselves, in that it helps us understand what it is that keeps us imprisoned by our programmed knee-jerk reactions, the repeated patterns of our familiar selves.

There are essentially 2 parts to the Enneagram. What we are more familiar with is the Enneagram of the personality or psychology. This has to do with the characteristic mental, emotional and behavioral patterns of our familiar selves. These are patterns germinated in our pre-personal and personal psychological history. This is the Enneagram of the Nine Types: Enneagram Institute.

Less well understood, but infinitely more powerful is the Enneagram of spirituality. Especially for those who are already on the spiritual path,  seeking a higher purpose or a deeper meaning. This is the Enneagram of getting back to the essence of who we are, not by mystical experiences, but by fully inhabiting our bodies in the PRESENT MOMENT. So that we are fully experiencing our emotions and our reality. We resist nothing, grasp nothing but allow reality to unfold.

How does knowing your Enneagram Type help?

Tana River Life Foundation
Philanthropy Linking Asia and Kenya

I remember watching an episode of Doctors Without Borders in high school.  That was when I decided that I wanted to be a doctor. The idea of helping people, regardless of race, creed and geographical location, was inspired and warmed this idealistic heart.  I didn't become a doctor - my calling turned out to be elsewhere. Polled as the #20 most inspiring charity in the United States, Doctors Without Borders and other medical missionaries have been the fuel for the dreams of many.  One such person is Gabriel Teo.

Separated by more than 4,000 miles, Kenya may seem an unlikely focus for this Malaysian who first visited the East African country for a holiday and met with medical missionaries. Inspired by them, Gabriel returned in 1995, leaving behind a career in tax accountancy. When you hear your calling, there simply is no choice but to heed it. And we are thankful he did.

The Tana River Life Foundation (TRLF) was set up as a Kenyan NPO in 2005 but began many years before as a private trust, first with Gabriel's own savings, then with donations, to help "assist the marginalized through education and the acquisition of livelihood skills" in the Tana River and Lamu Districts.

It began with one child, whose parents couldn't afford his secondary school fees (primary education is government funded).  The Foundation is now an umbrella of various community projects, all aimed at the holistic development of a human, for a "more just and honest society, a more complete humanity".

The foundation's philosophy is represented by SEED - Surmount, Educate, Empower, Dignify. This is done through both education-based initiatives and community projects to help different sectors of the local population develop a sustainable economy and self-reliance.

In a patriarchal society, women are the marginalized of the marginalized. To empower entire communities and develop better health and opportunities for the children, supporting the women and mothers is essential.  Through the Dziavye Women's Community Based Organization, income-generating activities, improved farming technology, savings and credit facilities, HIV/AIDS awareness programs are available.

One of the newer TRLF projects of is the Educational Centre Project (ECP), the building of a comprehensive community centre, which will also house the foundation office.  Over a 12-acre site, facilities will include a library, computer centre, as well as accommodations for staff, donors and the public.

What has come to be Tana River Life Foundation, from the vision of one man, is the realization of the dreams of many.
