Monthly News and Updates - May 2017

At the Adult Day Center (ADC), loved ones, including those with Alzheimer's disease and dementia, can spend an enjoyable day with our caring family. For caregivers, our program offers a much-needed break from daily caregiving stress and responsibilities.

Mark Your Calendar: On Saturday, May 20th, Laura Hawkins, Director of Program Outreach at Alzheimer's New Jersey, will present, "Communication Tips and Techniques in Alzheimer's Disease." Please join us at 10:00 am for this free informative program and refreshments at the Adult Day Center. RSVP 908-766-0180
Music Therapy Program Benefits Members

With its ability to calm agitation, stimulate positive interactions and assist cognitive function, music plays an integral role in our member's experience at the ADC. Our weekly music therapy program is facilitated by Haley Parent, a Board Certified Music Therapist with Jammin' Jenn Music Therapy. Haley takes our members down memory lane with uplifting songs that they associate with important events and emotions in their lives.  Music that sounds happy is likely to lift one's mood, beneficial for people with dementia who have lost their ability to adjust feelings through the thinking process.

Because of the benefits of music, our ADC includes many other programs throughout the month that include musical performances, sing-a-longs, and background music during our lunch and snack times. Music always makes us feel better, and stays in our minds and hearts a long time.

Montly Random Act of Kindness

During April, our members participated in making bookmarks for distribution at area libraries. They colored, cut, and pasted, making each bookmark colorful and unique. Great fun to create, and a thoughtful way to help local residents save their page!

In Health News, Did you know...?

Caregivers often report bathing or showering as one of the greatest challenges in caring for their loved ones. Read and print our tip sheet .

The Adult Day Center at Somerset Hills offers an optional shower service for attending members. Scheduled during their time at the Center, members can receive the service from our experienced and trained Certified Home Health Aides. Our Center features a private and convenient personal care room with walk-in shower with seat.

May is Older Americans Month

This annual national celebration helps bring awareness of issues and trends that impact the lives of those aging in our country, including the importance of maintaining an active and social lifestyle. According to research, older adults with an active and social lifestyle are less likely to develop health problems including depression, and also may improve their cognitive abilities or slow decline for those with dementia. Through the companionship and programming provided at our Adult Day Center, older adults benefit from an improved quality of life and feel purpose to their day.
