Vertigo Dance at Jacob's Pillow
July 4-8, 8pm @ Jacob's Pillow
Vertigo Dance Company is one of Israel's top contemporary dance troupes. The company makes its Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival debut with Mana, choreographed by founder Adi Wertheim. Mana, which refers to a vessel of light described in the mystical text the Zohar, is full of beautifully theatrical metaphor and the athleticism that is a signature of great contemporary dance from Israel. An eclectic score by Ran Bagno incorporates waltz, jazz, and klezmer-influenced music, while dramatic sets and costume designs transport the audience to a faraway world of shadow, light, and inspiration. MoMA Presents: Michal Aviad's "Invisible"
July 9-15, @ MoMA
While covering a demonstration for Israeli television, Nina meets Lily, an activist, and realizes that she knows Lily from something that happened to both of them a generation ago. For her first foray into fiction, respected Israeli documentary filmmaker Michal Aviad has created a moving film about friendship and the influence of the past, based on events that actually happened to more than a dozen young women in Tel Aviv in the late 1970s. "Gei Oni" in theatres
Beginning June 13 @ QUADCINEMA
GEI ONI interweaves a unique love story with the harsh realities of the first wave of Jewish European migration to the Ottoman-ruled Palestine at the end of the 19th century. Having survived a Russian pogrom in which most of her family were killed, 17 year-old Fania, (in an award-winning debut performance byTamar Alkan) her baby, her elderly uncle, and her traumatized brother arrive at the port of Jaffa. Having no real choice, Fania marries Yechiel, a native Jew and young widower left to work his land and care for his children alone.Through her entire journey, Fania keeps a harrowing secret from Yechiel that prevents them from truly beginning a life together.
