On Thursday, February 11, the Community Foundation hosted a pizza party for the Humane Society of Aurora (HSA).
Every quarter, the Foundation randomly selects an agency that "likes" the Foundation on Facebook and treats them to a pizza party. HSA was the first winner.
The pizza party came at an opportune time for HSA, as they celebrated their first anniversary as an established non-profit organization on February 10th.
The Humane Society of Aurora is 100% volunteer-run. These volunteers dedicate endless hours of their spare time working at the shelter, coordinating fundraisers and reaching out to the community through social media.

Humane Society of Aurora 's president Joy Bokuniewicz spoke of the growth HSA has experienced over the past year.
The agency had over 80 volunteers go through orientation and training, and i
n 2015 the volunteers spent more than 3,700 hours at the shelter and events. This is an increase of 191% from 2014. HSA participated
in 28 days of off-site events last year, including 16 days at the Aurora Farmer's Market. As a direct result of these events, 31 pets were adopted. The events also spread the word about HSA, which leads to additional adoptions.

In 2015, HSA created
The Humane Society of Aurora Fund
to support the Humane Society and its adoption program. HSA works in partnership with Aurora Animal Control and Care to increase adoptions and rescues, improve shelter conditions, and to educate and assist the community in responsible pet ownership.
It was an honor for the Community Foundation to share the evening with the HSA volunteers as they celebrated their growth and success.
