Dear members, friends and friends in rescue:

The Holidays is a time where no hope is high enough, where wishes do come true and where miracles do happen, but we have seen these miracles happen all year around, haven't we...
There is no better present than what is sincerely given from the heart and no marketing gimmicks will ever change that.
From our hearts we want to say THANK YOU and want to wish to you that peace is found for all your troubles, that whatever hopes you have, don't ever loose that hope and if you are praying for a miracle, that it soon may come through.
And remember everything is possible if you just believe and have faith.

Happy Holidays to all, much peace, love and cheer to you all, you so deserve it...XOXO

HPR CHRISTMAS FUNDRAISER.

(elf above)

Well once again our Christmas tree is up and is bear.
Many of you have been with us pretty much since our inception, many of you are just now getting to know us and learning about the work we do.
Regardless whether we just "met" or we known each other for years, you all know by now that we are a small organization but we are mighty!
We work with God and the support of all of you all year around so
not in a million we can do such good work alone.
Regardless of where you live your moral support and willingness to help is always there and that alone is priceless.
Regardless of how wealthy or un-wealthy you are, you come through for the animals when needed every time, that to our hearts and to one and each animal we save, is always priceless.
We have touched rock bottom many times before due to funding and because of you we floated right back up, that is indeed super-priceless.
I always get e-mails from people saying: I wish I could do more...
Whatever you do every time there is a need, you have no idea how much you do and how much it helps, so you are doing more, you are doing a lot, a lot, please know that.
Little contributions, big contributions they all make a huge difference in the lives of the animals we care for at our shelter as well as the new lives we save from kill shelters all over the nation.
We celebrate LIFE, almost everyday because of your caring and generosity, that my friends is indeed priceless.
Running a no kill shelter is not easy task.
A good friend always says to me: Why didn't you became rich first and then opened up a shelter.
And I say, I wish I would have had the time to plan this...
It all started when we did a huge rescue in 2007 where 200 + cats from a trailer park in Miami closed down, where humans and animals were evicted.
We did the rescue single handed, many animals found forever homes, many went to other rescue partners, but many weren't so lucky and are still with us today.
Then Katrina hit, and same scenario.
So that is when HPR went from being a strictly foster home only rescue group, to a shelter-sanctuary.
All obstacles and all the frustrations, ups and downs with our financial situation, short staff, lack of sleep, sadness, laughter, I will not change what I do for a minute.
As you all know many of the animal we rescue are for the most part are animals that are considered un-adoptable,
Beause of b
eing special needs, having behavior problems, or just because of their color.
Due to the above these animals are with us for a long time before a forever home comes along, if that  comes along at all!
So once they come in, we are prepare to offer sanctuary for to them for life.
M
y job is not too often very rewarding, but when that animal is saved or that animal finds a home, the feeling inside is like nothing I never experienced, is true happiness and true tears of joy, that this make sense to any of you?
It is hard, financially there is never enough money.
We gain a monthly donor and then we lose a monthly donor, so the little money that comes in monthly really never grows and the monthly expenses are way too many and they so grow, because there is always something, and something costs money.
The volunteers work very hard, but there aren't ever enough volunteer's either, so we are 4 lonely cats (this is a figure of speech of course).
We do have high hopes and I am hoping that a little bit of Christmas magic spreads through the words I speak in this letter and not only bring lots of presents to our tree but also good monthly support in the near future, like yesterday.
I always feel terrible asking for funding, like I always say,  I hate asking for funding as much as you hate hearing about it, but I do indeed find myself with no choice.
So I ask that all of you come together and help us to draw more people in.
You can do this for example by putting  a little donation jar at the office, if you are having a Christmas party can you ask people to donate to us, etc., etc.
You can also make your donation a gift for that someone that has everything and you just do not know what to get them.
We will send a picture of the animal your gift) saved, together with his or her story.
Or the story of what your gift did for the animals in general.
We really need your help and we need for your own Christmas magic to be spread around.
Here is how you can help:
One time donations can be made by putting an ornament or present under the Christmas tree or by the Menorah below.
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL THE DONATIONS MADE TO OUR CHRISTMAS TREE OR MENORAH, ARE ONLY ONE TIME DONATIONS.
If you wish to become a monthly donor, wich we desperately need please go to:
scroll down to our news section and look for
HPR's Guardian Angel Program.
From the drop down menu select the amount you wish to donate and then hit submit.
For those of you that are already sending a little something monthly and to our medical sponsors, I can say that I get tear eye right about now,  just thinking about how much these animals own their lives to you.
"THANK YOU" sincerely from the bottom of my heart.
To those of you that when we really needed send a little something, "THANK YOU" for your beautiful hearts and to those of you who really want to help financially but really cannot, "THANK YOU" for being with us in mind and spirit.
I tell you if we will get a penny for your thoughts, we will never have to ask for money again, your hearts are just HUGE.
Wishing you all the best for this holiday season and forever, you are all so dear to us and just wonderful people and we so much appreciate "YOU".
XOXO

We do have high hopes and wishes and we hope that they do come through.
We hope and wish for more monthly donors, of any amount, we really need support all year around.
And we Hope that with your help our Christmas fundraiser is a great success.

Again THANK YOU all and to all,
Happy Holidays.
May God be with you always.

Pets are not just for Christmas, they are for life!!!3catsbehind

If you are considering ADOPTING or
purchasing Laba pet as a gift,
  please think about the following
  before making a decision :

paw purple Please be sure that the person really wants a pet.

paw greenIf the pet is for a child, keep in mind that many children (specially toddlers) don't fully understand
what having a pet entails.

Paw blueBe sure that the person you are giving the pet to is willing
and able to care for a pet.
Specially in such difficult times with our economy being so bad.
Pets are expensive!
Training, veterinary care, grooming, food, litter,
spay/neutering and not to mention any unexpected medical
that may arise.
"IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD THE VET, YOU CANNOT AFFORD THE PET!

Christmas will pass on but the work and responsibility
of caring for an animal remains for the life of that animal.

paw greenMany pets given at Christmas time or any other Holiday for
 that matter
end up in shelters and many puppies and kittens
end up injured because of inappropriate handling by toddlers.
The reasons are endless:
The cute puppy with the red bow around his neck chewed up the
furniture , urinated all over the place or just grew too big.
Or the cute kitten scratched the toddler because it was handled
the wrong way, so out the door it went.
Many pets given to children go out the door and into a shelters
 right after
 the Holiday novelty is over.
Many animals are turn into shelters also just because
new pet owners do not  realize the time and work
involved to care for for a pet.

Please pets have no voice they are in your hands,
treat them well, with respect and make them part of the family.
If you are in doubt about making a pet part of your family do not get a pet.

Paw blueAll pets require an extraordinary amount of time,
money and effort so be wary.
Every pet needs a committed owner who accepts
the social responsibilities of pet ownership.
Dogs, in particular, require great consideration!
HPR cannot stress enough the importance of putting
 time into dogs to train,
socialize, and ensure they receive adequate exercise, etc.

If you do decide to give a pet as a Christmas gift after
reading all of the above, below are some
suggestions.

paw purpleLet the recipient choose the pet and you pay the adoption fee,
 making that your gift.
paw greenOlder pets are best for senior's as they are already settle.

paw greenCats are best for people that work too much.

Paw blueA Gold Fish makes a much better pet present for toddlers, if you have limited time, after all when you add a pet to your family
is like having another toddler, specially if the pet is a puppy.

paw purpleSave a life and ADOPT a pet from a shelter.
If you decide to buy a pet, please make sure that you do so
from a reputable breder.
Paw blueBefore adopting a pet, do some research to ensure you choose an animal who will fit the lifestyle and living arrangements of the recipient.

paw greenIf all possible choose an animal that is already spay or neutered so the recipient will not have to bear with the expense.
Spay/Neuter,
pets live longer, are far less likely to roam, run away, scratch, bite, mark territory or to develop mammal or testicular cancer.
Paw blue If the pet is not spay or neuter at the time of ADOPTION  or purchase,
you may want to purchase a gift certificate from a vet to
give to the recipient along with the pet.
paw greenIf you are looking for a purebred pet, please know that they
are many purebred cats and dogs sitting in shelters waiting
for a forever home.

paw purpleThey are many Black cats and dogs sitting in shelters which
unfortunately are the ones less likely to get adopted
and to make it out of the shelter alive because of their color,
please give them a second look and take one home.
They do look great with red bows and Santa hats!
Paw blueDisable pets and special needs animals need homes too,
they do require extra care and some a little extra attention,
but they do make wonderful pets.
After all it is going to come a time that all of us will need
extra care and attention at point as we age!
So try one for size, they make great pets.

paw greenALWAYS KEEP ONE THING IN MIND, THAT PETS ARE NOT
JUST FOR CHRISTMAS THEY ARE FOR LIFE!

With the right care and attention, pets are wonderful companions and a rewarding gift for loved ones that can afford one.
Make an informed decision.

Wishing you all a very Blessed Holiday Season.

A VOLUNTEER GOT RUN OVER BY A KITTY CAT!

Lyrics by Sugar, FL.

We like this song so much, we had decided to make it a tradition and put this up every year!

So here goes it...

A volunteer (Aida) got run over by a kitty cat
Walking through our shelter Christmas Eve, t
rying to put a Santa hat on me.
Trying to put a Santa hat on me.
(On her way home)
You can say there's no such thing as Santa Paws,
(Say there's no Santa Paws)
But as for me and my kitty pals, we believe.
(Lord, we believe)

Now we're all so proud of all the kitties,
They been takin' this so well.
See them there playing,
pouncing, napping and purring with each other.

It's not Christmas without Aida
All the family's dressed in black.
And we just can't help but wonder:
Should we open up her gifts or send them back?

R: A volunteer got run over by a kitty cat.
Walking through our shelter Christmas Eve.
(Midnight before Christmas)
You can say there's no such thing as Santa Paws,
(Say there's no Santa)
But as for me and my kitty pals we believe.
(Lord, we believe)

Now the goose is on the table (Friskie's Turkey)
And the scratch pad has catnip.
And a blue and silver toy
That would have just matched the hair in Aida's wig.

A license should be require for that!

A volunteer (Aida) got run over by a kitty cat
walking thorough our rescue Christmas Eve
trying to put a Santa hat on me!
you could say there is  no such thing as Santa Paws
but as for me and MY KITTIE PALS
WE BELIEVE,
WE BELIEVE,
IT SHOULD BE A GOOD FOREVER HOME FOR ALL OF US!
(sing it)

You can say there's no such thing as Santa Paws,
But as for me and my kitty pals we believe.

She'd been drinkin' too much eggnog,
And we'd begged her not to do it.
But she'd left her medication,
So she stumbled out the door into in the cold..

When they found her Christmas mornin',
At the scene of the attack,
There were paw prints on her forehead,
And incriminatin' kitty Claws marks on her back.
R: A volunteer (Aida) got run over by a kitty cat
Walking through our shelter Christmas Eve
I've warned all our friends and HPR volunteers
better watch out for yourselves
They should never give a Christmas hat nor reindeer antlers to a a volunteer with a mission of dressing up kitty cats!

dear santa
Dear Santa Paws:

My name is Sugar Bum (you can call me Sugar), i am only 4 years old and I have been at the shelter for that long.
I have a few strikes against me, first I am black, second I am an adult, just for those 2 reasons, nobody ever has inquired about me!
I do live up to my name, as I am sweet as SUGAR, have lovely manners and I am quite a lady, make a great lap warmer too!

I wish nothing more than a FOREVER HOME for Christmas,
I am a good girl and am no bother at all.
I am for sure not on anybody's naughty list,
I don't care about catnip or toys, I just want a home!
Is just about time!Thank you.
Please Santa Paws can you be so kind and put a good  forever home for me on your list for me..

RAIN NOW NINJA, PA.

We found little Rain listed on the kill list at NYC animal control while we went to check the list to pull another kitty.
We couldn't believe our eyes when we saw her there, just waiting to be euthanized in the morning.
We had no space for her we didn't know where in the world we were going to put her, but we just couldn't leave her to die.
She was only a few weeks old, her life was just beginning, it couldn't end that soon and definitely not that way.
So we immediately sent a memo to animal control and pulled her off the list.
Good old Pam, our VP had no space but when she learned about Rain her huge heart just couldn't say no to her so she made room for one more, the next day Rain was delivered to Pam.
Thanks to Pam huge heart Rain is alive today and thanks to all the TLC provided little Rain turned into the stunning kitty you see in the picture above.
We cannot thank you enough Pam, you are the best...
And it gets better Rain now Ninja is today in a wonderful forever home where she will never have to worry about being dumped again because she is a part of a family that adores her very much.
A happy ending indeed!
Heartfelt THANK YOU to all for a job well done, to Pam for saving nothing else than her life and to the adopted family for adopting a shelter pet and through Rain's adoption space opened and another life was saved.
Peace and love to you all...

And since a picture is more than a thousand words here is a pic of Rain now Ninja at home.

  GINA  NOW ZOE BENOT, NY

Another very lucky kitty saved from NYC animal control.
Gina landed at the finest (not) Manhattan shelter with a severe broken leg that had also open wounds.
She sat there for days with very little medical attention, so her leg got infected and as the days went by it got worse.
Due to the fact, she found herself on the "at risk" for the next morning.
We learned about Gina and put a hold on her immediately.
The was just one little problem, as usual all of our foster homes were full, so we had nowhere for Gina to go.
A good friend and HPR foster parent in Upstate NY, offered to take her in, but Gina was nowhere near to be able to travel that far so we needed a closer foster home for her to go.
So we made a phone call to one of our temp. foster Mom's, Nicole who is usually always full but does have a heart of gold, and so she made room for Gina to stay there until transport.
She needed surgery to amputate the leg as at this point it was not salvageable and her life was in great danger.
Since she needed the surgery immediately , one of the vets at the shelter offered to do the surgery for free.
Which we were very hesitant for them to do it,  because of the risk of infection, specially since that place is not the best, if you all know what we mean.
Unfortunately we had no choice so we agreed for them to proceed with the surgery.
Gina had the surgery and the next day she was transported to Nicole's vet to make sure all was good and that she was recuperating well.
She remained at the vets office for a week or so and from there into temp. foster with Nicole she went.
Unfortunately, for Gina while in foster care, she wasn't healing as well as we wanted her to, so off to the vet again she went.
That is where we found out that she had an infection and she needed another surgery.
That was our fear to begin with.
Thanks to the immense generosity of Steve R. that sponsored her medical, we were able to provide this wonderful kitty with the surgery she needed.
Gina came out of surgery with flying colors, and she is all better today except that she is now a 3 legged kitty.
But all happens for a reason, see while at the vets, being the charm one that Gina is, she touched many hearts, but she specially touched one heart.
One of the vet techs absolutely fell in love with Gina and well the rest is history...
Gina got herself a forever home, 3 legged and all...
Here is a picture of her at home, one member of the family though, seems a little grumpy, LOL

****
From all of us @ HPR we will like to wish these new families a lifetime of happiness and love and will like to say THANK YOU for adopting a homeless pet and saving a life.
Thank you to our foster parents for always making room for one more, lies are truly saved because of you.

Love and peace to all.
God Bless.

  33. Repeat previous step as often as is necessary (until you can hear  cries from cat outside door.)
  34. Lay out last sheet of paper. (This will be difficult in the small area of the toilet, but do your best.)
  35. Discover cat has already torn paper. Unlock door go out and hunt through various cupboards, looking for sheet of last year's paper. Remember that you haven't got any left because cat helped with wrapping last year.
  36. Return to lockable room, lock door, and sit on toilet and try to make torn sheet of paper look presentable.
  37. Seal box, wrap with paper and repair by very carefully sealing tears with transparent sticky tape. Tie up with ribbon and decorate with bows to hide worst areas.
  38. Label. Sit back and admire your handiwork, congratulate yourself on completing a difficult job.

  40. Spend 15 minutes looking for cat, before coming to obvious conclusion.
  41. Unwrap present, untie box and remove cat.
  42. Retrieve all discarded sheets of wrapping paper. Feed cat. Return to lockable room for last attempt, making certain you are alone and  the door is locked.
  43. Find least torn and wrinkled sheets of paper. Attempt to use sheets of same pattern.
  44. Vainly try and wrap present in patchwork of paper. Tie with now tattered ribbon and decorate with the now limp bows. Label and put present in bag, for fear of anyone seeing this disaster.
  45. When giving the gift, smile sweetly at receiver's face, as they try and hide their contempt at being handed such a badly wrapped present.
  46. Swear to yourself that next year, you will get the store to wrap the damn thing for you.
  47. Smile smugly, knowing that the recipient could have received a cat!
