The Book Seller - a Full-Service Independent Bookstore

Kit Hattem purchased The Book Seller from Nancy Rains in 1985, after having been employed by her since 1977. The business originally opened at 147 ½ Mill Street, (where the Hair Shaft now resides) in the "cellar" which is how it got its name - as a pun. At that time they carried almost strictly paperbacks and had only 3 hardcover titles.

Over the years, The Book Seller has been the first employer of hundreds of local teens, who have gone off to become architects, doctors, non-profit leaders and engineers.  Angie, the Manager of the Kid's Cellar, began working at the shop when she was barely sixteen years old and has now been working for Kit for over 16 years. Karen Weichhand, who was a buyer for large book stores in Chicago, has been employed by The Book Seller for 28 years. See Karen's Picks

The Book Seller has been a supporter of KVMR since 1986.  "It's important to think and speak independently, which is our philosophy here," says Hattem, when discussing the importance of supporting Community Radio.

The Book Seller carries great calendars, cards, games, book bags and journals, however their primary focus is on books. "If we don't carry what you're looking for, we will find it," says Hattem. Titles usually arrive in 1-2 days.

In addition to carrying thousands of titles, The Book Seller has the largest children's shop in Northern California, featuring books for kids of all ages from infants to young adults.
The Book Seller is located at 107 Mill Street in downtown Grass Valley and at www.thebookseller.biz Open extended hours for the holidays.
