Family Caregiving: Resolve to Ask for Help in 2016

Being a family caregiver is a hard, often thankless job. Many people juggle a full or part time job while handling the myriad responsibilities of caring for a loved one. It is emotionally taxing, physically draining and nearly impossible for one person to do it all, all of the time. Not surprisingly, family caregivers often report feelings of stress, anxiety and depression. It's impossible to be the best caregiver you can if you don't allow yourself time to recharge and take care of yourself physically and mentally. As we enter the New Year and you consider making positive changes in your life, consider asking for help with your caregiving responsibilities.

Let a trusted in-home senior care company like Home Care Plus help you take care of yourself so that you can take better care of your loved one. Whether it's for a few hours or a few days a week, our skilled, compassionate, dependable caregiving team will give you peace of mind that your loved one is well cared for while you are away. Make Your Resolutions the Right Way This Year

People put a lot of pressure on the transformative powers of the New Year and its ability to change them into a better version of themselves. Inevitably willpower wanes and the pressures of life come into play, and the reality is that change is hard. I'm not trying to say resolutions are a waste of time; in fact they can be great motivators when approached correctly. Avoid making sweeping lifestyle changes all at once, and you'll be more likely to stick to your resolutions this year. For more tips, visit our blog!
Healthy Eating: Easy Substitutions

In case your New Year's Resolutions included making healthier food choices, here are some quick, easy and healthy substitutions you can make:
  • Substitute nonfat Greek yogurt for sour cream or mayo in recipes. Top your baked potato with a dollop of Greek yogurt, throw some yogurt, lime juice and avocado into the food processor for a creamy salad dressing, swap out mayo with yogurt in your casseroles--you'll cut back on fat and calories while adding calcium, protein and probiotics
  • Make homemade salad dressings starting with olive or canola oil, dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and then add your choice of fresh herbs--basil, cilantro, dill.
  • Swap whole wheat bread or pasta for the white stuff--the extra fiber and complex carbs are more satiating
  • Beans & greens-add these to soups, chili, spaghetti, smoothies-they pack a nutritional punch unrivaled by many other foods!
  • Use an appetizer plate for dinner, and a coffee mug for serving cereal or soups. This will get you much closer to the actual serving sizes you should be eating!
