Spotlight on Research

Brain Involvement in an International Cohort of Lupus Patients
The reported frequency of "neuropsychiatric lupus" (NPL) (brain inflammation) varies widely, from 37% to 95%, in people with lupus, but severe inflammation of the brain is quite rare. The high degree of complications and variability reported across studies stems largely from differences in definitions used in studies of NPL.

Greetings!

October 1 marks the start of a new fiscal year for the Lupus Foundation of America, Philadelphia Tri-State Chapter. October is a busy month, and we are only a few short weeks away from the 19th Annual Lupus Loop 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk for Lupus Now! In this email we are providing you with information about upcoming programs, support group meetings, and events from the Lupus Foundation of America, Philadelphia Tri-State Chapter. Please also find highlights from the Living Well with Lupus Annual Symposium, as well as other tips and information for living well with lupus!

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), better known as the health care reform bill, was signed into law in March 2010. Included in the legislation were several provisions that the Lupus Foundation of America worked diligently to ensure were in the final law. Three of these provisions went into effect on September 23, 2010. Read more about the health care reform bill by clicking here.

Investigator-initiated research consists of studies done by the investigators themselves, without an outside sponsor. The Investigator-Initiated Studies page lists clinical trials that are currently recruiting participants for studies. Check out the newest observational studies featured on the national Lupus Foundation of America website.

"School is an important aspect of young peoples' lives and serves as the foundation for structuring their days. I want to remind everyone that the advice given is fairly generalized and I cannot always go into specific details that you should instead discuss with your regular rheumatologist or primary care physician. Also, you should ask your local school districts about policies and programs they have to help you out with being successful in school. Know your rights!" Read what else Dr. Peter Chira has to say on the topic of "Back to School with Lupus" in this Q&A session by clicking here.

This fall, please remember us during your annual workplace giving campaign! Many employers will match contributions made by their employees to qualifying charitable organizations. This is an easy way to double or even triple your donation to the Lupus Foundation of America, Philadelphia Tri-State Chapter.

As always, thank you for your generous support and continued friendship!

Sincerely,
-Annette

Annual Symposium Highlights

Sponsors of the
10th Annual Living Well with Lupus Symposium

Over 130 participants joined us for the Living Well with Lupus Annual Symposium this past Saturday, October 2, 2010. The 10th Annual Living Well with Lupus symposium was sponsored by a combined grant from Human Genome Sciences and GlaxoSmithKline.

Youth in the Loop for Life at Springfield Twp High School

The students in the Youth in the Loop for Life program at Springfield Township High School graciously acted as the hosts and hostesses for our event which took place in their High School.

Joan T. Merrill, M.D.

Joan T. Merrill, M.D., the Medical Director of the national Lupus Foundation of America presented the keynote presentation: "Lupus in the Lab: Lupus Expert Weighs in on the Future of Lupus Research." Dr. Merrill's passion for lupus research and high energy shone brightly throughout the presentation.

Other highlights of the day included workshops from Lawrence Brent, M.D. and Joan von Feldt, M.D. Throughout the symposium, participants discovered various exercise options for better health and explored the relationship between mind, body, and spirit and how it relates to living your best life. A special workshop was offered for the family, friends and loved ones of our participants with lupus and offered suggestions on how to take good care of oneself, even while caring for a loved one.

The symposium adjourned after closing remarks from Annette Myarick, CEO of the Lupus Foundation of America, Philadelphia Tri-State Chapter and Cheri Perron, Chair of the Patient and Community Services Committee. Annette and Cheri offered suggestions for the benefits of raising awareness of lupus, and the hope that the awareness will bring to all people affected by lupus.

We would like to express our thanks to all participants of the Living Well with Lupus symposium, all of our volunteers and workshop presenters. Special thanks to Dr. Merrill for taking the time to present a lupus research update to our participants. We are very appreciative of the continued support from the Youth in the Loop for Life program at Springfield Township High School. Thanks to the generous grant provided by GlaxoSmithKline and Human Genome Sciences, we were able to lower the cost to our participants and provide scholarships to many of the participants who requested financial assistance.
Living Well with Lupus: Vaccine Updates
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Officials at the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) are aware of the concern that people with lupus have had about the 2009 outbreak of the H1N1 (Swine) Flu. Please know that the members of the LFA Medical-Scientific Advisory Council are continuing to monitor the possible impact of the 2010 flu virus on people with lupus. Any updated information will be posted on the lupus.org website as soon as it becomes available. More information is available by clicking here.

The Lupus Foundation of America, Philadelphia Tri-State Chapter is pleased to be a resource for information and education about lupus. In addition to this monthly educational column, you can also request print materials in English and Spanish by contacting the Chapter office at 215-517-5070 or info@lupustristate.org.
