To Our Community,
Happy New Year! We greet 2013 with enthusiasm and gratitude. This June we will celebrate our 14th year of business as well as heading up the first National Yoga fundraiser.
We have teamed up with St. Judes Children's Research Hospital to create the "Yoga Gives to St. Jude Kids" campaign. Studios from around the country will be joining on June 15th to raise money for kids in desperate need. You can be a part of history. More details will be coming shortly. Stay tuned! The event is limited to 60 people. We did this event in 2011 and raised $80,000.00, we are going for more this year!
We hope you enter this year feeling as committed as we are to your practice and personal growth. Our staff is ready to guide you on your way to more knowledge and understanding of Yoga, on and off your mat. Your yoga practice is so personal and so intimate and we are honored to help you on your journey to discover what comes up for you on your mat.
We are grateful for you, our loyal students and we wish you all a sweet and prosperous New Year in every way!
We look forward to spending 2013 with you.

Ready to Make a Change for the New Year?
The 40 / 40 Challenge is Back!
40 Classes
40 Days
In many traditions it is believed that it takes 40 days to make or break a habit. If you do something for 40 days straight you can forge new neural pathways and "fill in" old, outdated ones.
What have you always wanted to create in your life? What patterns aren't working for you anymore? Are you ready to make real and lasting change?
These questions apply to your whole life, however, Yoga is one place where we can manifest change rapidly.
We will do this together. You make the commitment to forty days of yoga and we will give you a special unlimited pass to help you. You can come to any class on our schedule at either studio. It doesn't have to be the same class or time, just show up.
There is no better time to put this ancient teaching to the test.
$140
No extensions. No refunds. No going back!
Available all month this January! Valid at both locations.

Grant Mattos: January's Featured Teacher
Take a class with Grant this month!

When you are on your mat, what is the biggest pleasure you receive?
The biggest pleasure I receive while on my mat is becoming aware of what is going on for me on the inside that particular day.
Where else in your life, besides your mat, do you experience the greatest benefits of your practice?
One of my favorite things about yoga is it allows me to use everything that I practice on my mat and transfer it into every aspect of my life. Whether that is sitting in traffic or really listening to what someone is trying to verbally tell me. I am fully aware of how I am feeling and how I choose to react or respond in that moment.
You were a professional football player, what do you miss?
There are many things I miss about playing football. One of the biggest being the connection made with the guys on the team, especially at the professional level. Its such a special thing because your spending so much time together and everyone is from different walks of life yet there is a similar goal trying to be met. I had the honor to play with great guys not only on the field but off it as well. Guys like Ladainian Tomlinson, Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, Troy Palamalu, Jake Plummer and Rod Smith who really exemplified what being a good human being was all about.
Do you still watch a lot of football if so, who is your team? If not, why?
I just recently started to watch football again and finally through much hard personal work can sit and enjoy it. For a long while after I chose to stop playing, watching any football game was too challenging for me. I didn't have the tools yet at that time to separate my self worth from this game that had been a part of my life since I was 8 years old. More over I didn't have any idea as to who I was as a person without this game being a part of my daily life. It was through the practice of yoga that my eyes finally began to open to the possibility that there is more to me than just a this sport or any occupation.
What lessons in yoga are still hard for you to grasp?
One lesson in yoga I find particularly challenging to grasp is making the choice not to judge both myself and others. We're our own worst critic right? When my eyes were opened to how much I was actually judging not only myself but others as well I couldn't believe it! It took so much energy! It was such a natural thing to do while playing football because it was something that needed to be done to improve. Constantly checking in and judging myself and my opponent. So the switch from that to actually becoming aware that this is what I was doing on a regular basis was particularly challenging but so rewarding. The more I am aware of it the less likely I go through the downward cycle of judgment and, ultimately, the better I feel.
Do you have a New Year's resolution? If so, what is it? If not, why?
Each New Years I remind myself to continue to remain open and aware as I move down the path of a self examined life.
Who is your favorite muscian/band?
I have many favorite musicians and bands, but one who I am listening to consistently these days has been Robin Guthrie. I play it quite a bit while teaching yoga.
What is your ideal day off?
My ideal day off is spending time with my wife Christina on a sunny Sunday. Whatever we're doing as long as its with her I'm smiling.
All of Grant's classes are only $10 all January!

Free Week of Yoga
with Teacher Training Grad Kate Eales
I came to yoga in the year 2000 with the goal of easing stubborn pain in my body. What I found was a practice that not only helped heal old injuries, but quieted my mind and lifted my heart as well. And when I took my first prenatal yoga class here at City Yoga in 2010, I was so moved by my experience that I realized I'd found a new calling. After my son was born, I took my first teacher training at City Yoga, where I knew I'd learn from the people that had so changed my practice. In love with this new path, I've continued my training in prenatal yoga and yoga therapy ever since. My goal is to create a safe and welcoming space for yogis of every level to practice, so that we may move beyond our perceived physical limitations, and into the vast potential that we all share. I am so grateful and honored to teach at City Yoga, in the space where I first decided to share my passion for yoga and its endless possibilities with others.

Get Ready for Yoga Gives 2013!
Join us in supporting the kids of St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital

City Yoga invites you to join us in combining yoga, service and action by participating in our renowned Yogathon fundraiser to benefit the kids of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Yogathon is a high energy, creatively sequenced and deeply fulfilling way to take action as a yogi, as our past Yogathoners will agree. Last time we raised over $80,000, and this year we're hoping to raise even more now that Yogathon is a nationwide event! That's right, you'll be practicing with yogis across the country now thanks to your continued dedication to service.
A few quick facts about St. Jude Children's Research Hospital:
No family ever pays St. Jude for anything.
In 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer, was 4 percent. Today, the survival rate for this once deadly disease is 94 percent, thanks to research and treatment protocols developed at St. Jude. The daily operating cost for St. Jude is $1.8 million, which is primarily covered by public contributions. St. Jude was the first pediatric cancer research institution to place doctors, scientists and patients "all under one roof," creating a worldwide model for "bench-to-bedside" research and treatment of childhood cancers and other life-threatening diseases.
Mark your calendars!
