GSN Presents at the SOAR Conference

GSN team members Kate Lister and Katie Peyton presented at a statewide conference with Ohio's SOAR districts.  As part of a broader series on Social Emotional Learning, they presented two 1-hour workshops on Team Building and its impact on classroom communities. Participants debriefed a sample team building activity and learned about benefits of team building in schools and classrooms. Teachers who would like to implement the sample Team Building Unit from GSN can email Katie Peyton for a copy.

GSN has al ready seen the effectiveness of this training series! A previous SOAR participant from December's workshop on Mindfulness has been implementing a "Mindful Minute"  with her  7th graders every day since the last GSN workshop! The students love the Mindful M inute so much that they are independently researchin g other possible Mindfulness activities for their classroom.

GSN Hosts a STEM Community Engagement Team Meeting in
New York !

On February 24th, a group of 16 STEM professionals piled into one of Google's large conference rooms to talk about how to engage students in STEM learning and careers. The attendees represented the following companies and organizations: Arthur Ashe Institute, AST Studios, i2Camps, NY Cares, Kinnon Group, NYSCI, Fiduciary Trust Company International, Katz Architecture, Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and MIND Research Institute. Additionally, EPA of NY and Jet Blue expressed their desire to be involved in future meetings. GSN Staff engaged these professionals on topics of aspirational gaps, GSN's work and impact, the opportunity of supporting change with young people, and the ways to get involved with Community Engagement Teams (CETs).

GSN has already seen proof of the connections generated by this meeting. One of the attendees, a doctor at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, is now working with a Brooklyn Generation Schools (BGS) teacher to coordinate a student trip to the hospital to learn more about medical careers.

Building off of the momentum generated from this meeting, GSN will be sponsoring a community mixer at Brooklyn Creative League on March 17th to share the opportunity of participating in a CET around finance. All and all, it was a successful evening that will lead to greater community support and career engagement opportunities for the students at Brooklyn Generation School and other schools where GSN is working to provide career exposure, preparation and pathways experiences for students.

GSN Partners with Coors and TGYS to Provide SEL Training to Pagosa Elementary School Teachers

In a continued collaboration with the Adolph Coors Foundation and the Tony Grampsas Youth Services Program, GSN staff members Kate Lister and Brittney Ames provided professional development to the Pagosa Springs Elementary School teachers around Social Emotional Learning (SEL) practices on February 19th. The school has made it their goal to serve the whole student during the school day, which includes providing Advisory time to intentionally and proactively meet the social and emotional needs of their students.

The training specifically focused on Mindfulness practices within the school day to help the students deal with the stress of both their academic and personal lives. Research from the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University indicates that supportive, responsive relationships with caring adults as early in life as possible can prevent or reverse damaging effects caused by toxic stress. Pagosa Springs Elementary School teachers, with support from GSN, seek to reduce that stress through their Advisory time each day.
