NOW AIRING...
SPRINGING TOWARD A HEALTHIER FUTURE

Irish or not, it takes a lot more than luck to keep our community's lungs healthy!  Read on to learn about how Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails (BREATHE) is working to confront local lung health challenges this month...

Spring into Action for Asthma!

Do you have or know someone with asthma?  The answer is most likely YES, as asthma affects about 1 in 7 children and adults in the Sacramento area.

Dr. Garcia answers Rosemary's questions at a Parent Asthma Class

We're all affected by poor air quality that gets trapped in our region's bowl-shaped valley, and with the lack of rain and a weather pattern that created a strong inversion, we had more No Burn days on record this winter than many previous years.

Children in low-income neighborhoods are especially at risk for developing asthma, and although extremely manageable, it's vastly under-diagnosed and under-treated.
doctor, even though it's recommended by national guidelines. This creates huge costs for families and the health care system, including Emergency Room visits, hospitalizations, missed school days, and even death.

As spring allergy season begins, you can make a difference for asthma sufferers by sharing Your Asthma Book, a toolkit developed by concerned physicians, nurses, parents and community partners in our Volunteer Asthma Collaborative. We're currently revising the 5th edition, and getting it out to those who need it the most through our Parent Asthma Classes.

This winter, five volunteer doctors and respiratory therapists reached over 80 low-income parents of diagnosed and undiagnosed asthmatic children at local SETA Head Start centers

One parent said:

"This was a great presentation. Everything was very well explained. As a parent I've often thought my child had a cough or phlegm, and I've used Vicks vapor rub, but really it was asthma. I now feel like I can do something to really help when that happens."

If you are interested in joining our Asthma Collaborative or volunteering to teach a class on asthma , please contact Cassie Gardener at cgardener@sacbreathe.org

This winter, Dr. Seyal taught three Parent Asthma Classes to help more than 50 parents at SETA Head Start Centers

STAND Establishing "Best Practices" in Student Smoking Cessation

Which proactive, campus-based outreach is more effective in helping community college students quit smoking?

  1. A referral to the student health center.
  2. Peer-to-peer motivational interviewing.
  3. Peer-to-peer referrals to the California Smokers' Helpline.

That is the question our STAND Program will attempt to answer after completing its Street Team Research Project,  which was awarded major funding through California's Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program last August.

As a part of the research project, STAND is actively recruiting, training and maintaining a Street Team  of enthusiastic college students who will 'go the streets' on college campuses and help fellow students quit using tobacco

products.

Our trained Street Team members go to popular student hangouts, and share free cessation resources with their peers. Students who participate on the Street Team can earn credits towards classes, internship hours and other incentives like gift cards, movie tickets, etc.

The project is currently underway on the Sacramento City College campus. Student smokers who want to participate in the study and get help quitting their tobacco habit  can earn up to $50 in gift cards. Click here for more information.

2014 Hackademy Awards Re-Cap

Thank you to everyone
who helped make the 2014 Hackademy Awards a HUGE success!  We owe much gratitude to the dedicated volunteers and sponsors who made this event possible - including our incredible Four Star Presenting Sponsor, Western Health Advantage.

With approximately 300 people in attendance, this year's "Hacks" drew our largest audience to date! We were thrilled at the opportunity to share our message about eliminating the influence of tobacco in movies with such an enthusiastic group of students and supporters.
