Dear friends,

Thanksgiving is a time to spend with family and to give thanks for the abundance of life and love we share with those close to us.

On behalf of the family of women and girls who have been treated at a Hamlin hospital or have been served by a Hamlin midwife to ensure a safe delivery, we thank you.  Your love and support make it possible for the Hamlin team to serve the women of Ethiopia.

In 2014, we moved a step closer to our ultimate goal of eliminating the most serious childbirth injury, obstetric fistula, in Ethiopia.  We treated more than 2,000 patients this year at our main Addis Ababa hospital and in our five regional hospitals in Mekelle, Harar, Bahir Dar, Yirga 'Alem, and Metu.

We also graduated another 24 midwives this past October from the Hamlin College of Midwives. There are now nearly 100 Hamlin midwives working in rural parts of the country to help women safely deliver healthy babies.

But the challenge continues; the Ethiopian Health Ministry is estimating that there will still be approximately 27,000 untreated cases of fistula at the end of this year.  We hope to treat more than 3,000 women and girls in 2015, and ramp up to 4,000 in 2016.

The Health Ministry also estimates that 2014 will see approximately 3,500 new cases of obstetric fistula due to lack of access to competent maternal health care during prolonged obstructed labor in the rural parts of the country.

Hamlin midwives have assisted more than 10,000 safe deliveries working out of 27 rural government health care clinics.  Over the next three years, we will extend the reach of our midwives to 170 rural health care clinics. This deployment of the highest standard of midwifery care will continue to have a great impact on reducing the number of new cases of obstetric fistula across Ethiopia.

Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia, as the longest continuously serving dedicated Obstetric Fistula organization in the world has a great impact beyond the borders of Ethiopia through training of surgeons from around the world and its global campaign of awareness in the name of Dr. Catherine Hamlin.

We ask for your continued support as you plan your year-end giving. Here are three ways you can help:

  1. Visit our online donation page to make a contribution.
  2. If your employer has a matching contribution program, make sure you take advantage of this to increase the impact of your gift.
  3. Forward this email to someone else who believes that all mothers have the right to proper medical care.
  4. Connect with us on Facebook and Twitter to learn how your donations are being used to help.

Your donation makes a tremendous difference for these amazing, resilient women - helping them regain their dignity and return to their families with hope for a bright and productive future.

Together, we can end fistula in Ethiopia!

Best Regards,
