STEM Center USA creates
Fiat Lux Kit to Engage Students in Wearable Tech
Melissa and Lavanya are Mechanical Engineering sisters that are passionate about STEM education. They create hands-on curriculum and products, like the Fiat Lux, to excite the next generation of STEM leaders. Photo Credit: Matthew Carrillo.
Imagine a way to get children excited about wearable technology! Using the Fiat Lux Wearable Electronics Kit, students can create their own holiday outfit or Christmas ornament using smart LEDs, a buzzer, photocell, and an Arduino-compatible, programmable microcontroller. The Fiat Lux is the most affordable wearable kit on the market, and the only one to include a graphical programming interface for younger students and C language for others. Fiat Lux means "Let there be Light", and sparks creations everywhere - what will you make?

Sisters and co-founders, Melissa and Lavanya, of STEM Center USA designed this kit as the perfect tool for classrooms and creative projects. STEM Center USA was recently featured on ABC's Shark Tank, where Melissa and Lavanya pitched their idea for STEM education and products. Massachusetts STEM Summit
The Massachusetts STEM Summit was held on Tuesday, November 10th in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Summit focuses on STEM education and workforce development, with educators, business leaders, policymakers, parents and students all in attendance. This year's theme was "Promising Practices, Proven Results" which focused on strategies, models, tools, and approaches for improving the STEM landscape. During the Summit, Dr. Jenna Roecklein-Canfield, the MWM-MA Chair, and Sheila Boyington, the National States Chair for MWM, hosted a breakout session where over 75 people were in attendance. Jenna and Sheila covered the state of STEM in regards to women as well as the impact STEM mentoring can have. As part of the session, attendees were broken up into groups where they strategized on ways to build in MWM in MA. Overall it was a very successful event for Massachusetts and Million Women Mentors.

Be Counted! States Challenge
This November, Million Women Mentors issued a challenge to the states to engage ONE company with the Be Counted! Campaign. State Leaders have been challenged to work with the company to get their Be Counted! numbers counted within the MWM portal, all by December 15th! Leaders will work with their contact person from the company and help them input how many mentors they have who have completed 20 hours with a mentee, as well as how many mentees they have worked with. You can find the full details of the challenge here.

Partner Call Series
On November 17th we hosted our kickoff Partner Call that highlighted FIRST Robotics, American Association of University Women, and Science Olympiad as the top three contributors to the MWM pledge and Be Counted! metrics!
  • To access the presentation slides with a walkthrough of how to sign up and utilize the portal to make mentor matches, please click here.

From First Gen Female to College to STEM Career Role Model: One Woman's Path
Women account for only 32% of the degrees awarded in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Female, first-generation students are at an additional disadvantage, even though they are just as likely to be interested in STEM as their non-first-generation counterparts, but less likely to remain in the field or finish their degree. Bobi Garrett, a first-generation female student who is now the Deputy Lab Director of Strategic Programs and Partnerships at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), is an excellent role model for first-generation college students and women interested in STEM careers. Read more  here .

Meet the Stemettes event encourages young women in STEM
The Stemettes ran their first multi-city event last weekend in Dublin and Lon don, with plenty of wisdom to offer. Think about what you would like to  do rather than what you want to be, enter the BT Yo ung Scientist & Technology Exhibition to explore and learn about STEM and alwa ys listen out for wisdom from people who are further along in their career than you are. Those were some of the nuggets of advice offered by panelists at the Meet the Stemettes event, where they spoke about their sometimes "scenic" routes into their current jobs in STEM, while one of the events youngest panelist's revealed that the most inspiring event she attended this year was Inspirefest 2015. Screen Technovation's  new documentary CODEGIRL
Every year, Technovation challenges girls all over the world to build a mobile app that will address a community problem. Since 2010, nearly 5,000 girls from 60 countries have submitted to Technovation, thanks to dedicated volunteers around the world. Girls do not need to have programming experience to participate, and Technovation is free for any girl who wants to participate.

CODEGIRL follows teams who dream of holding their own in the world's fastest-growing industry. By 2017, the app market will be valued at $77 billion. Over 80% of these developers are male. The Technovation Challenge aims to change that by empowering girls worldwide to develop apps for an international competition. From rural Moldova to urban Brazil to suburban Massachusetts, teams of girls work to make an app that will better their community.
