Dear Friends of VIM,

A sincere heartfelt wish for a Happy Thanksgiving to all our volunteers and their loved ones. We, at VIM, are so thankful and grateful for your devotion and compassion in helping our low income neighbors in need. As you reflect this holiday season, know that by volunteering you have helped so many and ultimately saved lives.

Warmest regards,

Kelly Ranieli

Service Spotlight

VIM RECEIVES A GENEROUS DONATION FROM A PATIENT!

Volunteers in Medicine recently received an extravagant donation of $1,000.00 from one of our patient’s who has been with the clinic since 2010. She is a 53 year old female who was being seen at the clinic for chronic disease management and gynecological problems. This self supporting, self-employed housekeeper and mother of two young daughters felt compelled to donate to our mission of "having eyes to see those who are rendered invisible and excluded, opening arms to reach out to include them, healing hands to touch their lives with love, and in the process, heal ourselves". As an example to her young daughters, she presented this most gracious gift and shed tears of gratitude for making her life worth living. She explained that from the volunteer receptionists to the most qualified physicians she was always respected, given the utmost attention to all her medical needs, but more so received a personal touch as that of a friend. We take pride in the service we render to all our patients and never anticipate a monetary gift for treating another person as we would want to be treated ourselves. Bravo again!

CULTURAL COMPETENCE LUNCHEON

A heartfelt thanks to MSW Intern Danielle Spadine from Marywood University for providing training for all staff and volunteers on cultural competence.

We recognize that a diverse population is served at VIM and we strive to be inclusive while providing quality, compassionate care. This brief session was to help increase our cultural awareness, which is the foundation of communication and involves the ability of standing back from ourselves and becoming aware of our cultural values, beliefs and perceptions.

Volunteers 'R' Us

IN SYMPATHY

The VIM team would like to extend sincere condolences to the family of Dr. Salvatore (Sam) De Pasquale on his recent passing. Dr. De Pasquale volunteered at the clinic from 2014 to 2015. He was a well- respected general surgeon in the Luzerne County area for over 50 years. His enthusiasm to serve the working low income families of our clinic was evident by his willingness to adjust to any schedule that was available. His passion was to perform minor surgical procedures but he adapted successfully to providing chronic disease management as well as acute evaluations and treatments. He was a comic in his own rite and enjoyed participating in the lunch table conversations, speaking so lovingly of his wife and their journey through life together. His children most certainly can take pride in his genuine legacy.
