Important Announcements
YEAR-END PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES will be held on Monday, May 21st, from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m. Parents are asked to come to school at the following times, based on the first letter of their child's last name: 12-2 (last names beginning with letters G-N);  2-4 (last names beginning w/O-Z) and 5-7 (last names beginning w/A-F). Please note that the teacher's dinner hour will be from 4-5. Don't miss  this opportunity to meet with your child's teachers before the end of the end of the school year and discuss any issues you may have. This is also a great opportunity to brainstorm with teachers about what type of summer activities or enrichment your child might benefit from, whether it's a specialized camp, more leisure reading, or an on-line math or science oriented game... Our teachers are a rich resource for info about programs and activities in our area!
Message from the Principal

Frac City, Temple Run, Popped Equations, Hall of Rings, Sport-Proport, Power Pitch, Park My Car Equation... fractions, proportions, determining circumference, variables, simplifying expressions and many more math concepts were the order of operations for 450 Hardy students and staff yesterday.

At the 11th annual Math Carnival, which was led by 8th grade math teacher Sarah Bax and 170 eighth graders, Hardy students and staff were challenged to solve math problems through participation in fun, carnival-like games. The common denominator for each of the games was one or more math concepts: at the Frac City booth, students were asked to convert fractions to decimals; at the Temple Run booth participants had to broad jump first to determine their fractional distance, run through a temple of fire (so to speak), pick a fraction off the tree and find the sum; and at the Park My Car booth, the objective was to be the first person to place his or her car at the correct location on the coordinated plane.

Creating and developing the games reflected much collaboration, communication and organization by each group of 5-6 students. Each game also offered players a tutorial as well as visual and specific directions on how the game was played. Our eighth graders were friendly, helpful, cooperative and oozing with enthusiasm as they bartered for student participation. A lot of the games also included physical activity and of course small treats and candy as peripheral prizes. I thought the number one factor to the Math Carnival was FUN.

A very special thanks to the 8th grade students for providing so much math fun and to Ms. Bax for her leadership and of course to the 8th grade team and Hardy staff for all of their support.

Peace,

Dr. Mary

We Need Your Help
PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS and plan to participate in these two fun and easy PTA fundraising events:

Super-Easy PTA Fundraiser at Homemade Pizza Company, May 22
On this Tuesday, May 22nd, Homemade Pizza Company, which is located almost right next to Hardy at 1826 Wisconsin Ave., will be donating $5 from every pizza, $2 from every salad, and $1 from every order of breadsticks to the Hardy PTA. No need to order ahead, just pick up a pizza on your way home from school --  take a night off from cooking,  enjoy a tasty pizza, and support the PTA!

Hardy at the Georgetown Flea Market , June 3
On Sunday, June 3rd (rain date, June 10th), the PTA is partnering up with our friends (and generous supporters) at the Georgetown Flea Market for a fabulous fundraising event! We're holding a BAKE SALE / WHITE ELEPHANT SALE and will be selling tasty home-made treats and special treasures Hardy families are no longer using to raise funds for school programs and activities.

We need your help to make this event successful, so pull out your aprons, cookbooks, and Grandma's secret apple pie recipe and get baking... or dig through your attic or basement and donate something special  -- vases, art work, bowls, mirrors, furniture, frames, lamps, and anything particularly special or interesting are perfect for the White Elephant sale.  Finally, we need volunteers to help with the event! Please contact parent Sarah  Spooner at (202) 716-2269 to contribute, help organize and/or staff a table during the event.
