JaDa Farm became official in 2011 after Jessa Hershner and her husband decided to follow their goal of creating a homestead.  At the time, they had two toddlers and wanted to be able to provide them with the purest quality foods possible as well as the experiences of growing up on a small farm.

The soap making process came about as a project with Jessa's mother.  They wanted to make a simple, organic soap that they could use instead of buying shampoos, conditioners, soaps or face wash.  They found a recipe for cold process Castile bar soap, tweaked it and developed a formula that matched their soap needs.

The rich lather and silky suds are good for a shave, washing hair or as a body scrub.  Although they didn't plan to sell the soaps, as she began giving them out to friends and family as gifts, Jessa says that orders started pouring in.  The custom bars became very popular and, thus, the JaDa Farm soap business launched.  They started creating the Brewer's Soap line as a special request for a brewery supply store in Westerville.  

The products in the soap are organic, all natural and purchased locally.  They try as much as possible to infuse oils with herbs grown on their own homestead and use products (such as goat's milk or honey) from local farms.  They also brew their own beers and make wines that are used in the Brewer's Soap.

Soap-making continues to be a hobby that they greatly enjoy as they continue to develop their homestead into a self-sufficient, all natural farm.

If you want to guarantee your egg nog purchase, you need to contact the store (phone, email or in person) at least one week prior to when you want it.  Deliveries for Hartzler Dairy are made to the store on Thursdays.  Those customers who request a "hold" for egg nog will have product put aside for them and should ask for it.  All other customer's purchases will be subject to availability.  The egg nog season is short and fleeting - don't let it pass you by.  If you've not tried Hartzler Family Dairy's egg nog, then you don't know what you're missing!

Rainbow Trout Meunière

Ingredients :
  • 4 rainbow trout fillets*, skin on (6 to 8 ounces each)
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil*
  • 6 tablespoons butter*, divided
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons shallots*, very finely chopped
  • 1-1/2 to 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons fresh parsley*, finely chopped
  • 4 lemon wedges
Preparation :

Combine the flour, salt, paprika, onion powder and a few grinds of black pepper in a shallow dish. Dredge the fillets in the flour mixture, shaking off the excess.
Heat the olive oil along with 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 2 of the the trout fillets, skin side up and cook until golden on the first side, 1-1/2 to 2 minutes. Turn carefully and finish cooking, 1-1/2 to 2 minutes longer. Transfer to a serving platter and repeat with the remaining 2 fillets.
Keeping the pan over medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon of the remaining butter. Add the shallots and sauté until soft and translucent, about 1-1/2 minutes. Add the remaining butter and cook, stirring constantly, until the butter begins to foam and the color starts to darken. Quickly whisk in the lemon juice, add the parsley, combine well, drizzle over the trout fillets and serve immediately. Garnish with lemon wedges.

Makes 4 servings
