$10 General Admission

$5 Youth under 18

Taos Charter School and Teatro  Serpiente are bringing original musical theater to Taos through an after-school theater program called

Keep it Spinning.

Throughout the six-week program, students have the opportunity to create original songs; learn the basics of acting, directing and stagecraft; and - most importantly - work collaboratively on a creative adventure. The project culminates in a weekend of performances in The Harwood Museum of Art's Arthur Bell Auditorium.  This production is directed by Rich Greywolf, Scott Tennant, and Adam Overley, with musical direction by Laura Bulkin.

Funding for this project was generously provided through two grants from the Taos Community Foundation.

FILM:  ERNEST AND CELESTINE

Friday, May 23, 7 pm
Saturday May 24, 1 pm
$6 Harwood Museum Alliance Members & 18 and under
$8 General Admission

Deep below snowy, cobblestone streets, tucked away in networks of winding subterranean tunnels, lives a civilization of hardworking mice, terrified of the bears who live above ground. Unlike her fellow mice, Celestine is an artist and a dreamer - and when she nearly ends up as breakfast for ursine troubadour Ernest, the two form an unlikely bond. But it isn't long before their friendship is put on trial by their respective bear-fearing and mice-eating communities.

Fresh from standing ovations at Cannes and Toronto, Ernest & Celestine joyfully leaps across genres and influences to capture the kinetic, limitless possibilities of animated storytelling. Like a gorgeous watercolor painting brought to life, a constantly shifting pastel color palette bursts and drips across the screen, while wonderful storytelling and brilliant comic timing draw up influences as varied as Buster Keaton, Bug Bunny and the outlaw romanticism of Bonnie and Clyde. Bringing it all together is the on-screen chemistry between the two lead characters - a flowing, tender and playful rapport that will put a smile on your face and make your heart grow. Based on the classic Belgian book series by Gabrielle Vincent, Ernest & Celestine won France's Csar Award for Best Animated Feature, and has been nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 86th Academy Awards.

EXPANDED FREE MUSEUM ADMISSION FOR YOUTH

Free museum admission for youth 18 and under

The Harwood Museum of Art has long provided free museum admission to children ages 12 and under.  Last fall we added six years to that number!
Youth ages 18 and under are now always  admitted to the Harwood Museum of Art free of charge. This change comes both as the Harwood reaffirms its commitment to youth and families, and as we reflect upon the values of community engagement and education with which Lucy Harwood formed our museum 90 years ago.  Museum admission continues to be free for all Taos County residents every Sunday.  See you at the Harwood!

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

Susan Longhenry
What are your children, grandchildren, tweens and teens doing this summer?  Immersing themselves in creativity?  They will if they join the Harwood Museum of Art's Art Exploration workshops!  This summer we debut two workshops just for tweens and teens led by talented teaching artists Steve Gootgeld and Nina Silfverberg.  These particular workshops  were proposed by members of our new Teen Arts Advisory group, which is working on teen-focused, teen-driven programming at the Harwood.

Our Department of Museum Learning and Public Programs has also developed two Art Exploration workshops for younger children, including one led by the magical puppet artist Cristina Masoliver and another exploring the enduring comment, "My Kid Could Do That!"  Thanks to the Fasken Youth Arts Outreach and Scholarship Fund, need-based scholarships are available for both Teen and Children's Art Explorations.

Last but not least, please join us this Saturday, May 3 at 203 Fine Art for the opening celebration of the Children's Art - Unrestrained benefit exhibition and silent auction.  We're grateful to 203 Fine Art for helping to support our Art in the Schools partnership with Enos Garcia Elementary School.  Bid early, and often!

And have a wonderful, artful summer.

ART EXPLORATION WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN

Tuesday, July 8 - Friday, July 11
10am - noon
Performance Saturday, July 12, 1 pm
Designed for ages 5-12
Parent participation required for children under 6

Children will work with Cristina Masoliver, one of New Mexico's most magnificent and creative artists, in creating a multi-media puppet performance from scratch.  This workshop is inspired by Dogs' Night, a children's book about frisky dogs playing in London's The National Gallery - where adventurous dogs escape from their paintings only to return at the end of the night to the wrong artwork!  Participants will create puppets, design and build a small stage set, work on a script, and practice for a public performance that will take place at 1 pm on Saturday July 12.

MY KID COULD DO THAT!

Tuesday, July 22 - Friday, July 25

10 am - noon

Reception July 25, 2 pm

Designed for ages 5-12

Parent participation required for children under 6

Bill Gersh, Lobo

Ever hear the words "My Kid Could Do That!" when in a gallery exhibiting contemporary art?  During this workshop we'll explore that question with inspiration from work in the exhibition Highlights from the Gus Foster Collection.

Working with the Harwood's talented museum educators, children will experience that exhibition and then, as a group, select pieces to reinterpret and create in the Fern Hogue Mitchell Education Center.  The program will culminate with an exhibition in the Sidney & Gladys Smith Children's Art Gallery of paintings, drawings and prints created during the program.
