We invite you to enjoy a series of exhibitions opening Saturday, September 21 in celebration of the Harwood's 90th anniversary.  The Paintings of Burt Harwood and Single Lens Reflex:  The Photographs of Burt Harwood celebrate the creative lives of Burt and Lucy Harwood, while The Taos Municipal Schools Historic Art Collection presents this remarkable collection on long-term loan to the Harwood.  Last but not least, our Curator's Wall exhibits Peter Parks: New Works.

"This series of exhibitions has been designed to honor the cultural legacy of Lucy and Burt Harwood," says Jina Brenneman, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions. "Over the past year, the Curatorial Department at the Harwood Museum of Art has taken time to reflect. Our time spent in the archives of the Harwood Museum of Art, the UNM Art Museum, and the Smithsonian Archives of American Art has led to several common themes which we'll share with the public in these exhibitions. The research efforts of the curatorial staff resulted in a thorough chronology, dispelled myths, and assembled new photo documentation of the Harwoods' lives which is sure to intrigue and interest our visitors both locally, nationally and internationally."

MUSEUM ADMISSION FOR YOUTH 18 AND UNDER NOW FREE!

The Harwood Museum of Art has long provided free museum admission to children ages 12 and under.  Now we're adding six years to that number!  Beginning September 21 and moving into the future, youth ages 18 and under will always be admitted to the Harwood Museum of Art free of charge. This change comes as the Harwood reaffirms its commitment to youth and families, and as we reflect upon the values of community engagement and education with which Lucy Harwood formed the Museum 90 years ago.

Dear Friends,

Happy September! This is a very important month for the Harwood Museum of Art as we launch our 90th anniversary celebration on September 21 with the opening of four terrific exhibitions.  I thank the Harwood's Curatorial team members for their terrific work on those exhibitions, and congratulate them on the impressive results.

On September 21 we also bring to you the free, family-friendly Burt and Lucy Community Day celebrating museum founder Lucy Harwood, her husband Burt, and the Harwood's 90 years of serving as the artistic, cultural, and intellectual hub of Taos.

We've highlighted all of the museum's anniversary celebration plans for you in this newsletter.  I look forward to celebrating the Harwood Museum of Art's 90th Anniversary with all of you, and hope to see you throughout the month of September at the museum!

Sincerely,

IN THE ARTHUR BELL AUDITORIUM

LA CAMIONETA: THE JOURNEY OF ONE AMERICAN SCHOOL BUS

The Harwood Museum of Art, in collaboration with Emerging Pictures, proudly presents La Camioneta: The Journey of One American School Bus.

Every day dozens of decommissioned school buses leave the United States on a southward migration that carries them to Guatemala, where they are repaired, repainted, and resurrected as the brightly colored camionetas that bring the vast majority of Guatemalans to work each day. La Camioneta follows one such bus on its transformative journey: a journey between north and south, between life and death, and through an unfolding collection of moments, people, and places that serve to quietly remind us of the interconnected worlds in which we live.
"Quietly moving... An upbeat story of resilience, regeneration and artistic imagination." - Stephen Holden, New York Times.  Spanish with English subtitles

Thursday, September 12, 7 p.m.

ONE TRACK HEART: THE STORY OF KRISHNA DAS

The Harwood Museum of Art, in collaboration with Emerging Pictures, proudly presents One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das.

In 1970, a young musician named Jeffrey Kagel walked away from the American dream of rock 'n' roll stardom - turning down the lead singer slot in the band that would become Blue Oyster Cult. Kagel sold all of his possessions and moved from the suburbs of New York to the foothills of the Himalayas in search of happiness and a little-known saint named Neem Karoli Baba (or Maharaji).
One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das follows Kagel's journey to India and back, his struggles with depression and drug abuse, and his eventual emergence as Krishna Das - the world-renowned spiritual teacher, chant master and Grammy-nominated recording artist. Featuring interviews with Be Here Now author and spiritual guru Ram Dass, Grammy-winning producer Rick Rubin, New York Times bestselling author Sharon Salzberg, and two-time Pulitzer Prize nominee Daniel Goleman, as well as a score by Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis and Devadas, One Track Heart is the inspiring story of how one man's journey continues to transform countless lives.

Tuesday, Sept 17 & Wednesday, Sept 18, 7 p.m. LETTERS TO JACKIE:  REMEMBERING PRESIDENT KENNEDY

The Harwood Museum of Art, in collaboration with Emerging Pictures, proudly presents: Letters to Jackie: Remembering President Kennedy.

President John Fitzgerald Kennedy died on a Friday afternoon. The following Monday, 45,000 letters arrived at the White House from bereaved citizens, who sat down after the assassination to share their grief, shock, and outrage.
Within seven weeks, Jacqueline Kennedy had received over 800,000 letters.  This touching film focuses on these deeply personal letters that flooded in from all over the country to comfort a woman who was not just the fashionable First Lady, but also a wife and a mother. Set against a treasure trove of archival footage taken during the Kennedy era, the moving letters are read by twenty of today's top actors including Jessica Chastain, Chris Cooper, Viola Davis, Zooey Deschanel, Kirsten Dunst, Anne Hathaway, Laura Linney, Frances McDormand, Mark Ruffalo, Octavia Spencer, Channing Tatum, Betty White and Michelle Williams.

Film tickets: $8  Harwood Museum Alliance Members*, $10 nonmembers, unless otherwise noted. Call 575-758-9826 to purchase tickets and to learn about our discount card.

*Individual level and above.

All films and performances are held in the state-of-the-art Arthur Bell Auditorium, equipped with a surround-sound audio system and high-definition video projection.

AAM CORE DOCUMENTS VERIFICATION

Last month the Harwood learned that it has passed the American Alliance of Museums' Core Documents Verification, a step towards AAM accreditation.

This verifies that the Harwood's Mission, Strategic Plan, Disaster Plan, Collections Management Policy, and Code of Ethics reflect best practices in the museum field.

We plan to apply for accreditation as soon as AAM begins to accept applications following the conversion of its self-study process to an online system.  This is sure to be an excellent way to celebrate our 90th anniversary!
