FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MUSEUM LEARNING AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS

Dear Friends,

Rebecca Aubin

During my first three months at the Harwood many teachers, students and community members have shared with me how important the Harwood is to them and their families. And I've been impressed and inspired to witness and work on programs like the Neighborhood Arts Project and Art Exploration workshops this summer.  I saw firsthand how the Harwood's quality programs encourage Taos youth to become better citizens of the world through art.  I look forward to continuing and growing the Harwood's excellent educational programs.

As the museum gears up for its 90th Anniversary, we celebrate all of you and our collective place in this unique, creative community.  One of the ways that we plan to say "Thank You!" is by offering free museum admission to all during our September 21 Burt and Lucy Community Day. This family-friendly event is motivated by the Harwood's commitment to engage youth and family audiences, both during our anniversary celebration and into the future. In that spirit, I'm pleased to announce that, beginning September 21, ALL youth 18 and under will always be granted  free admission to the Harwood Museum of Art. You read it here first!

The Harwood Museum of Art is justifiably proud of its rich history of providing a wide variety of high-quality programs. We encourage and welcome collaboration and ideas. Please feel free to contact me if you have thoughts on programming or events at the Harwood Museum of Art.

I hope to see all of you on
Saturday, September 21 as we launch the Harwood's 90th anniversary celebration with our free, family-friendly Burt and Lucy Community Day!

Sincerely,

    Rebecca Aubin

ART IN THE SCHOOLS

Art in the Schools Program

Art in the Schools enhances learning through the arts for more than 600 students, educators and parents each month.  During the 2013-14 school year this program, which began as a pilot program over seven years ago, will serve 36 classes from Pre-K through Fifth grade at Enos Garcia Elementary School. That's the entire school!  Art in the Schools also serves students from other schools in the Taos Municipal Schools district, charter schools in Taos, independent schools, and the UNM-Taos Kids Campus.  Read below how you can help us keep bringing this innovative program, which combines gallery visits with hands-on art-making experiences, to Taos' young students.

BACK TO SCHOOL CAMPAIGN

The Harwood Museum of Art sparks learning at all levels. We also must raise 100% of the expenses for the museum's educational programs every year.  As we launch our Back to School Campaign, we ask for your support.  To date the museum has raised $22,914 of the $46,000 needed to bring Art in the Schools to the children of our community during the 2013-14 school year.  We need your help in raising the additional $23,000!.  A challenge from the Wilder Green Fund will match your gifts, up to $2500 for gifts received by September 30.

How can YOU support Art in the Schools?
Sponsor a class for the year (8 visits) $ 1,000

Sponsor one day (2 classes per day) $ 257

Sponsor one class  (2 hours per month) $ 128

Sponsor one student (8 visits) $ 58

Please support this program by linking to the UNM Foundation secure website and include

Art in the Schools in the comments field to designate the gift.  You may also contact Juniper Manley, Director of Development at

[email protected] and 575-758-9826 x 116 with any questions about this important Back to School Campaign.   Thank you for your support!

EXPANDED FREE ADMISSION FOR YOUTH

Free museum admission for youth 18 and under beginning September 21!
The Harwood Museum of Art has long provided free museum admission to children ages 12 and under.  Now we're adding six years to that number!

Beginning September 21 and moving into the future, youth ages 18 and under will always be admitted to the Harwood Museum of Art free of charge. This change comes both as the Harwood reaffirms its commitment to youth and families, and as we reflect upon the values of community engagement and education with which Lucy Harwood formed our museum 90 years ago. We think that she would approve of this commemoration of the Harwood's milestone anniversary.

Museum admission will continue to be free for all Taos County residents every Sunday.
See you at the Harwood!
