Message from the Rabbi

Over the last 5 years, the  Keshet  of  Kavod  (Rainbow of Respect) has become a beloved and essential component of Yavneh's culture. For those of you who are new to Yavneh, קשת/ keshet  means rainbow in Hebrew and כבוד/ kavod  means respect. Each year, we articulate seven overarching values/character traits, one for every color of the rainbow, to focus on as individuals and as a community. When put together, they build our Yavneh  Keshet  of  Kavod : Rainbow of Respect. In Jewish tradition the rainbow is a symbol of God's brit (covenant) with all of humanity after the flood in the book of Genesis. It is a symbol of keeping a promise to behave in a more ethical way.

The  Keshet of  Kavod helps each of our students exercise their mensch muscles by creating opportunities for them to learn, practice and cultivate specific character traits. We select these character traits from the "Periodic Table" of Values/Character strengths based on  Character Strengths and Virtues by Christopher Peterson and Martin Seligman and  How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character  by Paul Tough.

Every member of the Yavneh community is invited to help choose this year's 7 values/character traits. Ask yourself, which are your strengths and which could you use a little more of or a little less of? Which one of these traits would help you stop and think, is what I'm about to do a reflection of who I am and who I want to be? Children will be discussing and nominating their top choices in their class, and you, their parents, are invited to  nominate your choices by filling out this quick  form.

Please join us as we mark Character Day on Friday, September 15th and reveal our  Keshet of  Kavod values for this year and then be sure to join us for our first  Keshet of  Kavod Assembly on Monday, September 18th.
Shabbat Shalom - Laurie
