"The Love Movement" at Fair Street
Students present donation to special guest

During the month of January, students at Fair Street IB World learned about the importance of empathy and compassion through character education lessons.  To better understand these character traits through a real life setting, kindergarten classes recently participated in a fundraising event called "The Love Movement" to help individuals with illnesses and to provide support to their families.

When advertising for the event, students designed hearts decorated with inspirations and displayed their creations throughout the school.  They also created a special commercial to promote their venture.   Bruster's Ice Cream of Gainesville partnered with Fair Street through the sale of red and white swirled "Love Pops". The students raised over $500, and the proceeds were donated to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center's Hospice unit.  The donation was presented to Cathy Wozniak, Executive Director of Hospice, during Fair Street's convocation program held on Thursday, February 18th.
GHS Students Visit State Capitol
Students with Governor & Local Legislators

Students from the GHS  FCCLA and SkillsUSA clubs visited the State Capitol to advocate for CTAE programs and Career and Technical Student Organizations. They were able to speak with Governor Deal, Senator Miller, Representative Rogers and Representative Hawkins and provide information to them about the many benefits of CTAE programs.

Each year during National  FCCLA week, GHS students visit the capitol and initiate student-led discussions with  legislators that represent the Gainesville area. The students discuss how CTAE and CTSOs are beneficial and emphasize the many opportunities provided to students through organizations such as  FCCLA. The students also express their gratitude to legislators for the continuation of funding of the Georgia CTAE programs which allow students to graduate with marketable skills that prepare them for college and the workforce.
Heartsavers to the Rescue
Focusing on the Heart

The Early Childhood Education students at Gainesville High School recently completed CPR, First Aid, and AED training.  All students were awarded American Heartsaver Certification.  The students also completed a unit of study on "building a healthy heart".  One group even created a door cover depicting what they had learned.  With February being "Heart Month", the students are engaging in activities that focus specifically on the heart.

During the session, Dr. Parrish offered some new strategies to help build the rigor in math classes across the grade levels.  Overall, it was a great professional learning session for Miss Dodd, and she is eager to share what she has learned with her colleagues.
