Honoring Our Dedicated School Board
L to R:  Brett Mercer, John Filson, Delores Diaz, Wanda Creel,
Willie Mitchell, and Sammy Smith

The Gainesville City School System joins a statewide celebration to salute the tremendous efforts of our school board members. Governor Nathan Deal has proclaimed the week of March 14 - 18 as School Board Appreciation Week in Georgia. The weeklong observance highlights the many contributions of local boards of education.

The board members serving our school district are Ward 1 - Brett Mercer (2 years of service), Ward 2 - John Filson (2 months of service), Ward 3 - Willie Mitchell (25 years of service), Ward 4 - Dr. Delores Diaz (6 years of service), and Ward 5 - Sammy Smith (8 years of service).  The Board was recently honored as an Exemplary School Board by the Georgia School Boards Association.

As constitutional officers of Georgia, school board members are responsible for setting educational policies, employing school personnel, providing buildings and equipment, operating a transportation system and disbursing school funds. As community leaders, they serve as advocates for children in local public schools and must study, evaluate, and decide what actions are in the best interest of students.

Our school district commends our board members for their dedication to serving the needs of our students and employees and for their commitment to providing quality education for all children. The board will be recognized at the regular meeting scheduled on March 21st at the Public Safety Complex.
Henderson Receives Philip Wright Award
L to R: Patricia Henderson with Mr. Wright

Congratulations to Patricia "Patti" Henderson as the recipient of the 2016 Philip Wright Award!  Mrs. Henderson serves as the Special Education Coordinator for the school district.  She and fourteen award recipients within the region were recognized at the 15th Annual Philip Wright Awards Ceremony held on March 4th in Cleveland, Georgia.

The Philip Wright Award recognizes individuals for their service, commitment and advocacy of children with disabilities.  The award honors the legacy created by Mr. Wright, highlighting his commitment to improving educational services for students with disabilities in school districts within the Pioneer RESA region.

Michael Enright, Director of Special Education, describes Patti as a dedicated team member with a passion for ensuring that students with disabilities have access to the appropriate resources needed for a positive post secondary outcome.  Having worked many years in the school system, she brings a wealth of knowledge and professional experience to the district's special education program.

Mr. Enright s tates, "As our Special Education Facilitator, Patti took the lead in many district initiatives. When the Georgia Department of Education instituted the Georgia Alternate Assessment program, Patti took the bull by the horns and became the district champion for the initiative. Our assessment scores have consistently risen with Patti at the helm."

Patti is also a strong advocate for the inclusion model of education and feels very strongly that children with disabilities should be included in regular education programs.  Her first question in any discussion of a child is "How can we meet this child's needs in the regular classroom?"

Mrs. Henderson is a strong asset to the school system. She is commended for her tremendous work with the Special Education department and for her commitment to serving our students with disabilities.

Enota Hosts First Math Bee
Students participate in Math Bee

Enota held its first annual math bee on Thursday, March 3rd. Each class held a competition to pick two class winners, and the class winners then competed in grade-level competitions held in the media center. The competition format was challenging and required that students answer timed questions from a presentation using white boards. Students had to complete complex problems and rapidly hold up their answers for moderators to judge.  Eighteen students placed in the grade-level competitions.

The math bee was a huge success thanks to Ms. Laura Wingo and the Math Action Team who coordinated the competition. Ms. Wingo stated,  "Enota came together to create an awesome first time math bee. It will only get better from here." Principal Roach agreed and stated, "It was very exciting seeing our top math students from each grade level compete in our first math bee. I could really see how hard these students have worked to become so strong in math."

Congratulations to all of the math bee winners and participants for doing an outstanding job!
