TNG: We're Here to Make You Look Good

Nick Tesi, Founder

We are now moving into a more dynamic part of the year. Of course now as the weather is getting better we will be out there doing our scanning and processing it as fast as possible. I do like this time of year. Thanks to all of our business partners for your belief in us.

At TNG Visual Effects we are constantly striving to innovate and develop new, improved approaches to 3D scanning. Our crack-team of technolog y experts, scan-techs, and 3D artists constantly push the bar higher day by day.

As always, we will continue to provide Expert 3D Scanning Services to our customers. Our job is to make you look good, guaranteed.
2017 TNG Original 3D Characters

Did you know that all of our featured newsletter characters are TNG Originals

We build high-resolution original 3D characters from 3D scans every month to feature in our newsletter.  These models are suitable for film, tv, vr and games, and are available for purchase. Contact us at  877-879-2937 for details, and visit our portfolio of originals at

3D Photogrammetry Services

Photogrammetry is emerging as our go-to technique, using high resolution photography to build a highly accurate 3D model. Photogrammetry can be used for environments and subjects of all sizes.

3D Structured Light Scanning Services

At TNG Visual Effects we use Artec hand-held scanners to do structured light scanning of heads, bodies and  props.

LiDAR 3D Scanning Services

At TNG we use Faro for the large subjects.

3D Scans for E-Commerce & Props

E-commerce sites routinely use 3D scans of their SKUs, and everyday objects are often 3D scanned for to use as props in film and tv projects.

A Body Double, Ready for Action

It is an exciting time in the world of 3D visual effects. There is a convergence of many technologies, which allows us to do more and more complex work than ever before. Powerful computer programs, and skilled 3D digital artists build out great 3D eye-candy for all kinds of entertainment platforms. Lots of our 3D characters  are appearing on TV, in games and in films as supporting characters, action heroes, and villains. It is a great time to be in the business of VFX with so many creative minds building amazing worlds for our entertainment.

Software is getting faster and so are our pipelines. They also run more smoothly when manipulating data, either from 3D scans or 3D sculpts.  Hardware is also getting faster and more adaptable when used with faster GPU's and SSD drives. 3D scanners are also improving rapidly, with more choices available: Photogrammetry , Lidar and Structured Light, Laser, plus others.

We are now easily able to combine characters and character parts together in order to attain the end result needed for the character, as envisioned by the writer.

In the event that you have existing 3D scans that need clean-up, retopo, texture, and final QC , we are happy to perform these services for you to help you get your project done.

This is our mission, to deliver action-ready digital doubles; it's what we love to do.

Photogrammetry - Simple to Complex

Flexibility in parameters is a high note for photogrammetry. Literally using any camera in the world, you can achieve a 3D mesh result with texture. But sometimes it's not good enough to just achieve a result - you want the best result.

Technology is always changing, especially in regards to computing power, which does directly affect photogrammetry
results. Likewise camera technology changes in regard to megapixel resolution, which nets us more points in the photogrammetry point clouds. At a basic level, photogrammetry algorithms analyze every pixel of every photo taken, and counts the occurrence of references to the neighbor pixels' absolute differences. This is part of how the X, Y, Z translation position of any given vertex in the point cloud is determined.

So although megapixel is a formidable factor in the end resulting mesh, I wouldn't go there immediately. There are some basic fundamentals that have to be taken into account prior to just parking a truckload of megapixels into your project. For example, the lighting in which you use on your project is highly consequential in the quality and consistency of your mesh and texture. If there's not enough light, the image becomes degraded with noise, and your resulting 3D mesh will similarly have that noise baked in. Likewise, an overexposed image with have highlights that occlude the actual data you were trying to photograph, and it results in noise as well in the 3D mesh.

A camera's settings determine how it interacts with light, and so the study of light is very important, and to observe what's happening with the light when you setup a scenario. It's often a desire to have your 3D mesh with a flat lit texture, and that can be challenging to setup. The lighting has to be soft and spread out.

Each picture can be used a few different ways in photogrammetry. It could be alignment, detail, or coverage a name a few. A wider framed shot with a good depth of field would be helpful for alignment whereas a tighter framed shot with a narrow depth of field would establish quality.

Lidar is Measurable

Lidar is touted as the scanning technology used for large objects. Buildings, outdoor environments, vehicles of all kinds even including airplanes and trains, are scanned with Lidar because of the accurate data it collects. All the organic and man-made shapes in the world can be measured, and for 3D models we need to get the best measurements possible.

Measurements from  a Lidar scan.

Lidar scans give us the ability to insert other objects or people into the scene as long as we know the distance from where the scan was taken, in relation to the other object scanned.

Photography still plays an important part with Lidar scanning, and is relied upon for texture maps and reference for the original colors and materials. If possible we strive for the  best situation, which is to set up a camera from the same POV as the scanner.

Drones mounted with a high-resolution camera are a great way to go to capture textures, as long as reference points are in place to keep everything aligned. When using drones it is important to measure your distance from the subject and check on city ordinances before launch.

Images, measurements and location are all important for clean Lidar scans. We always do our best to clear out the set / area beforehand so that we don't have to fix it in post.
