Scoliosis Screening Information for 5th through 8th Graders
On Thursday November 30, 2017 the school nurse along with trained PE faculty, other HCS nurses, and Calhoun/UAH nursing students will conduct the state mandated scoliosis screening to check for abnormalities of the spine such as scoliosis (a side-to side curvature), kyphosis (humpback) or lordosis (swayback). Spinal screening is required annually by law for school children in the state of Alabama in Grades 5-9.
If you already opted out of health screenings when you signed your student up on Infosnap, your student will not be screened but you will get a referral letter requesting that your student be evaluated by a physician.
For all remaining students whose parents wish to opt out of the screening, either e-mail the nurse (
[email protected]
) or send a note with your child before the screening and a referral letter will be sent home to be completed by your physician. Please ask your student to deliver the note to their PE teacher or to the clinic on the elementary side before the screening date. Likewise, if you feel that your child needs to be screened individually, please contact the nurse.
Please note that if we do not finish all of the screenings on November 30th or if your child is absent that day, we will screen them on another day in the near future.

Our half price book fair begins tomorrow! Book fair will be open from 7:30-2:30 each day this week. Classes will be visiting the book fair during their regularly scheduled library time (see below). We need lots of volunteers! Please use the link below to sign up to work. Each volunteer gets $5 off a purchase!

Mistletoe Market is coming soon! Mistletoe Market is an onsite holiday market where students can shop for gifts for families, friends, teachers, and everyone on their list! Mistletoe Market will be open from December 11-15, 2017. We will be sending home flyers and envelopes with lists for purchasing. No items will be over $6 and we have a wide variety of gifts for all ages!
