WORKPLACE HAZARDS: FAQs
How should workplace health and safety hazards be dealt with?

There is a three-step process for dealing with workplace hazards. First, they must be recognized; then they must be assessed; and finally, if necessary, they must be controlled.  Recognition involves both identifying a hazard and determining if there is a possibility of workers being affected by it. If there is such a possibility, it must be assessed and if it is found to be significant, the hazard must be controlled.

A health and safety representative is required to perform a workplace inspection on a monthly basis.  Workplace inspections identify the hazards. These hazards are then assessed based on the risk, probability, frequency and consequence of the injury.

Company policies and procedures need to be developed specific to the workplace and implemented with training in order to control identified hazards. Control can be applied at the source of the hazard, along the path between the source and the worker, or at the worker. Control at the source is preferred. The control of hazards is a general duty for employers under OHSA Section 25(2)(h)
