The Power of Positive and Negative Thinking
You Need Both Outlooks to Succeed

Norman Vincent Peal had The Power of Positive Thinking, and Bobby Knight had The Power of Negative Thinking. So which is it? Do you need to focus on just the positive to succeed or should you zero in on the negative? In today's video, entrepreneur Patrick Bet-David explains why you need to count your blessings even as you're preparing for the worst.
"Head Shot Happy Hour" Returns!
We're making it easy and affordable to get a high-quality,
professional
photograph for all of your business needs.

Having a high-quality, current head shot is a necessity in business. Regardless of your title or what it is you're selling, the first impression that a prospective customer or client gets is often based on an image of you. Whether it's by way of viewing your company website, seeing your picture in the local newspaper, picking up one of your business cards, or any other marketing medium that has your photograph on it, your picture can make or break that first impression. Many small business owners, however, make the mistake of using an old, unprofessional, or shabbily edited photo for business purposes, and they put off getting the proper one taken.

Last year, the Chamber held its first "Head Shot Happy Hour," and it was such a success that it's back again for a second year. Bella Lux Images will be on site on Tuesday, September 12 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Chamber offices. The price is just $50 and includes two poses as well as retouching. Legal Hair & Day Spa will also be on hand for complimentary last-minute hair and makeup touch-ups. Bookings are first-come, first-serve, so don't delay. Call the Chamber offices at 740-282-6226 to book a time.  You may pay that day with cash or check. In addition, the Chamber will provide refreshments for you to enjoy while you wait or after your photo session is over.

And if you can't make it on September 12, both Bella Lux and Newbrough Photo will be offering discounts on individual and staff photos throughout the entire month of September.  Click on the links above to visit their websites for more information.  Why not check this one off your "to-do" list once and for all and get a quality, professional head shot that you can use for all of your promotional and advertising needs?  Hope to see you at the second annual "Head Shot Happy Hour."

Quarter 2 Prosperity Pulse Survey Results Are In

The Ohio Chamber of Commerce Research Foundation released the findings of its quarterly business leader’s survey today.  The Quarter 2 findings reveal the following:

  • The statewide Prosperity Pulse moved up slightly from a 5.0 to 5.1 in Q2, with an anticipated uptick for Q3 at 5.4.
  • Although anticipated profit growth in Q2 was not realized, expenses were kept significantly lower, allowing profits to continue to outpace expenses.
  • 74% of business leaders are optimistic about the economic climate.
  • Workforce worries increased as employee numbers slightly decreased or didn’t increase as anticipated.
  • Workforce worries also weigh heavy on the minds of many of the state’s top business sectors: Finance/Insurance, Manufacturing, Transportation/Logistics, Construction and Healthcare.

5 Things I Hate About the Tax Code

It’s over. I’ve had it. This just isn’t working out, Internal Revenue Code. We’ve tried and tried. I just need a real Code. I need a Code that is more competitive, more pro-growth. It’s been 31 years and, for all the reasons below and more, I’m moving on. Done. Finito.

1. High Rates

The United States has the highest marginal corporate tax rate among the 35 industrialized countries of the OECD. Our successful small businesses are facing even worse with combined federal and state marginal rates close to 45%. I know being number one is great at the Olympics, but in the world of tax rates, well, it’s basically the worst.

2. Internationally Uncompetitive

As I’ve noted before, we are the last member of the major industrialized OECD countries still clinging to your anti-competitive worldwide system of taxation we adopted in the 1980s.

Today in History

-  August 11, 1929  -

Babe Ruth hit his 500th home run at League Park in Cleveland, Ohio. Ruth was pretty confident he was going to hit his milestone homer that day and arranged in advance for a police officer to "find the kid who gets the ball and bring him to me. I'd kind of like to save that one." Sure enough, as Gordon Cobledick reported for The Plain Dealer, "He hit the first ball pitched by Willis Hudlin on his first at bat and it went sailing high over the right field wall and into Lexington Avenue -- for No. 500.hit." You can read more about the Babe's legendary homer here.

- 2,000,000  -

The number of copies Glen Campbell's 1975 hit, "Rhinestone Cowboy," sold. Written by Larry Weiss, "Rhinestone Cowboy" was Campbell's biggest success in a career filled with many milestones. May he rest in peace.
