We offer our congratulations and gratitude to Board member Greg Watson upon his April appointment by Governor Deval Patrick as the Massachusetts Commissioner of Agriculture. A polymath, Greg has a deep background in food and farming issues and previously held the same post from 1990-1993. Massachusetts is already at the forefront of reinventing local, organic and fair food systems, and Greg's leadership at the state level will no doubt help make the state a breakthrough model for the abundance of local and regional food and farming initiatives flowering across the nation and world. Go, Greg!

A message from Nina Simons, Bioneers Co-Founder & CEO
|
I believe that our inner and outer work go hand in hand, pursuant to the ancient wisdom, "as below, so above." That each feeds and strengthens the other so that we may both embody and act from the change we long for in the world. The world is calling for our engaged action, and action that is uninformed by some form of personal practice is likely less effective, or may even create more harm. As I see it, the call is to heal ourselves inwardly, while we simultaneously co-create and midwife in a new culture and civilization.
Among my personal passions in designing programs for the Bioneers conference is to bring together both the inner and outer dimensions of social transformation. Revealing the relationship between the two can lead to greater integration. That integration is essential for developing the leadership capacities in each of us, as I believe that this time on Earth asks us all to step forward with our own unique style of leadership...

Remembering Alex Karras

It was a profound privilege and joy to know Alex Karras, and we are deeply saddened by his passing. We offer our deepest sympathies to his beloved wife Susan Clark. Both have been long-time supporters of Bioneers, and they have brought a lot of light and heart into our circle.
Alex was a profoundly humble man; at the same time he was sharp as a tack. He cared deeply about people and the planet. He never forgot his home-town Detroit football fans and continued his dedication to the wellbeing of the city. Whether you knew and loved Alex from his legendary days on the original, groundbreaking Monday Night Football broadcasts, or as Mongo in the riotously funny "Blazing Saddles," you couldn't help but love him for his authenticity, humor and huge heart.
Alex, we love you and we thank you for all the love and light you brought into the world.

Bioneers Co-CEO and Co-Founder Kenny Ausubel is honored to join the Presidential Action Project (PCAP) Advisory Council.
The Presidential Climate Action Project was conceived by Bioneers Board member David Orr at a conference of sustainable development leaders in 2007. David's idea was to create an action plan for the 44th President to energetically address global warming during the first 100 days of his Administration. In the months and years that followed, PCAP grew into a four-year, $4 million policy initiative that the co-chairman of President-elect Obama's transition team called the "gold standard" of policy input to the new Administration....
In all, PCAP has produced more than 200 proposals for changes in federal policies and programs to mitigate climate change or to adapt to its impacts. The project has engaged more than 300 experts on topics ranging from fresh water resources, oceans, energy, national security, agriculture, transportation and international relations, to state and local leadership and job creation. PCAP has written and delivered to the White House a draft presidential address on the State of the Climate and the texts for several executive orders.

Cosmic Inspiration: The Whidbey GeoDome at Bioneers 2012
Here's a don't-miss at Bioneers 2012--for everyone, and especially for educators.
The Whidbey GeoDome will provide a cosmic context for exploring the patterns of nature and finding biomimetic strategies for the world's most pressing problems. The GeoDome is a portable immersive visualization environment (an inflatable dome, 25 feet in circumference and 13 feet high) that can provide breath-taking visualizations in a guided tour of the universe, the evolution of life on earth, the unfolding story of humanity, and ecosystemic insights into your own bioregion.
This stunningly immersive learning environment is designed to facilitate dialogues about what it takes to increase the resilience of communities and bioregions. Combining interactive storytelling with immersive visualizations of the latest scientific data and visualizations from NASA, NOAA, and elsewhere, it provides a big-picture context that demonstrates the profound interconnectedness and interdependence of ecosystems at multiple scales. It inspires participants to reflect on humanity's function in the cosmos at this unique time in history.
Come join David McConville, President of the Buckminster Fuller Institute, on live, interactive tours of the observable cosmos--to explore what Fuller meant by his appeal to "start with Universe" when attempting to solve global challenges. There will be regular showings of the signature production "The Earth Portal: A Guided Tour of the Universe and Our Place in It."
The Whidbey GeoDome team is exploring the use of immersive learning environments for the teaching of STEM literacy and Next Generation Science Standards in k-12 settings. Examples of innovative approaches to transformative education combining the GeoDome experience with integrative learning activities will be demonstrated at the Bioneers exhibit: arts-based self-expression with poetry, free writing, drawing, small group discussion, and direct encounters with the natural world.
