Hurricane Harvey Update . . .

Thankfully, GPAH suffered no damage during Hurricane Harvey, but so many in this area were not as lucky.  As far as we know, only one of our greyhound families had to evacuate and that was by boat!   Rory the hound and his family did make it to safety; we have reached out this family to see if there is any help that GPAH might be able to offer. We want to help any greyhound family that has suffered at the hands of this epic storm . . . do you need dog food or temporary housing for a greyhound? If so, please contact us at 832-813-8419 or email. We are all in this together! Please let us know if you need help.

Also, one of our long-time veterinary clinics, Stueber Airline Veterinary Animal Hospital, was forced to evacuate its new facility as flood waters filled the first floor! With the help of its dedicated staff and many volunteers, animals at the hospital were safely  evacuated by boat.  This boat rescue  was just one of  thousands around the
area; it's hard to comprehend the amount of devastation Harvey left behind. Dr. Heimlich and his staff have been with GPAH almost from the beginning; our thoughts and prayers are with him and his staff during this tragic time.

If you want to help animals displaced or injured by Harvey, please consider a donation to the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation. Dr. Rick Wall of the GPAH vet network posted this on Facebook:

" I am very blessed to have come through Hurricane Harvey without harm to my family, pets, home and clinics!  However, many of my colleagues, and the creatures they care for, are not so fortunate.  In the days, weeks and perhaps months to come Texas veterinarians and staffs will be helping animals that are injured and/or displaced by this awful disaster.  There are many veterinary clinics across our state that are currently unable to reopen and may need assistance to do so.  There are also many animals that will need the services of those clinics.  The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation (TVMF) is the philanthropic arm of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA).  TVMF has established a disaster fund to help veterinarians care for animals displaced and/or injured by Harvey.
GPAH Alum Bailey thanks
Harvey First Responders

In this time of tragedy, where your volunteer time, monies and prayers can really help, I hope you will consider a donation to this fund.  As the current Chairman of the Board for the TVMA, I can tell you that there are absolutely no administrative costs removed from your donation; 100% will go to help animals in need!!!  To donate, click here and choose DISASTER in the foundation program box.

The dangerous situation around the Gulf Coast continues to unfold. But, what strikes us as we watch the videos and news coverage is that complete strangers are helping those in need; the outpouring of support whether it be of time, manpower, goods and services, or cash donations has been humbling. No effort is too small. No kindness goes unappreciated. Pl ease do what you can, where you can.  And stay safe; there are still dangerous conditions around parts of the area as evacuations continue more than a week after Harvey made landfall.

On behalf of the GPA Houston hounds, Sundance wants to say THANK ROOOO to everyone who has asked about the status of the kennel and offered  to help him and
Sundance
his fellow hounds. He is happy to report that Kennel Master Robbie took very good care of them and that his kennel home remained safe and dry! GPAH has heard from individual members, fellow greyhound owners across the country, and greyhound adoption groups from Texas and as far away as Pennsylvania, all offering to help if needed.

For sure, Sundance is happy that the weather to clear so he can once again dance in the Texas sun!

Special Thank You to Our Kennel Master . . .

Neither wind nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays the Kennel Master from the swift completion of his care of the hounds . . .

man and gh in rain
Our Kennel Master has been a part of the GPAH family for over 25 years!

During that  time, with every storm, he has stayed beside our kennel hounds 24/7 to ensure their safety.

Simply put, Robbie is our HERO! The simple act of saying "thank you" will never convey the amount of respect, gratitude, and love that we have for this man.  And, you will never find anyone more dedicated to the greyhound breed!

Robbie, please know how much we appreciate ALL that you do for our pups!
Pup of the Month . . . Dino

Racing Name: Kells Dinero
DOB: 03/15/2013     Tats:  33A-60827
Sire: Yahoo Omar     Dam: Old Tradition

Dino (Kells Dinero) is full of vim and vigor. He does have a lot of energy but evens it out with an even bigger heart.  He looooves to play fetch in the yard and is very enthusiastic and friendly. Dino is perhaps the most happy-go-lucky greyhound ever; but, at the same time when he slows down, he is beyond sweet and loving. He will run and play and then smother you with kisses. Dino is dynamic and is working hard on his leash manners. Best home for Dino is one with a large yard where he can run and play with his toys and maybe have some older children to play with him.  His favorite toy is his kong; he could play FOREVER with that thing!  And, yet, he will give it up with a firm "mine" command. He is beyond eager to please and just loves to be with people.  He is a stuffy destroyer, so he needs supervision when playing with them. He is high prey so he will need a very strong human leader when going on walks where there are many small dogs. Dino is worth a lot of dinero. He just needs a chance. Sweet, sweet boy.

Hounds from Mobile, AL heading to GPAH . . .

While Harvey was still a tropical depression and its course uncertain, GPA Nat'l learned from the Mobile, Alabama track that there will still hounds needing to go to an adoption group, contrary to previous information received that all dogs had been placed.

Although our kennel is full, the Intake Committee offered to take in four more hounds with another twelve heading to Austin. Harvey put a monkey wrench on delivery of these new hounds; as of this writing, they will be arriving on Monday, September 4th, assuming transport from Alabama can be made safely around areas still flooded. We look forward to welcoming the Mobile 4 and introducing them to the GPAH family.

To help with the increased number of hounds in our program, we are looking for part time help at the kennel. The job requires working directly with the dogs, cleaning kennels, preparing food, turnouts, and other duties. Experience working with dogs or in a kennel/vet/boarding setting would be helpful. Please contact the kennel office at 832-813-8419 or email us your resume.

Fundraiser Update - Painted Pet Party by April Murphy . . .

Our Painted Pat Party was a greyt success! GPAH members and supporters created fourteen masterpieces under the watchful eye of artist and GPAH friend, April Murphy. April has a knack of taking each painter from uncertain amateur status to confident artist! In addition, she donated $700 to GPAH from the party proceeds!

Below are some of the paintings, immortalizing (from right to left and top to bottom): Cleo, Easy Dog, Kit Kat, Fez, Faithy, Becca, Floyd, and Shelley. April did not have time during the party to add her special touch to all the paintings when this photo was taken, but she did finish each painting and had them ready for pick up the following day.

If you've never attended one of these parties, you don't know what you've missed!

Facebook Auction Coordinator Needed . . .

Since GPAH does not have a major fundraiser planned for this fall, we would like to have several smaller ones.  We are looking for a volunteer to set up and  manage an
Auction Pic
auction on our Facebook page.  We would like to hold several different Facebook auctions during the next couple of months, highlighting just a few items each time.

We have a volunteer who will assist in getting the auction item photos to you to post and administer.

If you are interested, we would appreciate it!  Contact Sherrie  to volunteer.

The hounds send you licks and leans for VOLUNTEERING!

Spring Golf Tournament . . .

We would like to hold a Greyt Golf Tournament in the Spring of 2018. We need to move on this now but need to know if there is enough interest among our members and supporters to start planning.

We would love to hear from you. In past years, our golf tournaments have raised over $20,000 per tournament, so it is definitely worth the effort if we know our members are interested.

Please give us a shout and let us know!

It's a win for the kennel hounds!
Greyhound Trivia . . .

Greyhounds are the oldest purebred dog, dating back to the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Paintings inside the tombs of the great Pyramids depicted greyhounds. The Egyptians valued their greyhounds so much that the birth of one was second in importance to the birth of a human boy. When a pet greyhound died, the entire family mourned by shaving their heads, fasting, and wailing.
