Stay Healthy During the Holidays

* * *

End of the year holidays... multiple opportunities to enter the new year bemoaning your seasonal indulgences or begin the new cycle uplifted and transformed.  At Pacific Naturopathic, we consciously strive for the latter. This issue of Pacific Naturopathic Newsletter is filled with suggestions that may lend new meaning to and offer a different experience of the season.

Dr. Connie writes of mental/emotional/spiritual opportunities that may give new meaning to the season, and then presents a thoughtful evaluation of one of the hottest topics in health care -- the concept that vaccinations actually are preventive medicine. Dr. Marcel reminds readers that infection and severity of symptoms are dependent the resistance of the host and offers a powerful preventive and therapeutic tool for immune system enhancement.  Dr. Corrine softens the rhetoric with her insights into the profound healing power of stillness, and Jane Hernandez continues to explore life transformation through reprogramming the subconscious.  Powerful stuff. Nicole Noceto brings to consciousness the connection between personal health and the health of the planet.

Speaking of transformation -- in various places in this newsletter you will find references to a deeply moving and beautiful film -- "Finding Happiness."  The movie is an adventure about one person's quest for meaning in life.  We strongly urge all of our readers to see this movie at the Aquarius Theater in Palo Alto on either Wednesday, December 11 at 7:00 PM or Saturday, December 14, at 10:30 AM.  Rarely does such a positive, uplifting, feel-good movie play at major venues on a large screen. Buy tickets in advance as soon as you can as the two showings will definitely be sold out.  We will also be selling DVDs of the movie in our office in December -- just in time for stocking stuffers!

Healthier, Happier Holidays

* * *

As a person who thoroughly enjoys holidays, I have been surprised to hear from so many friends and clients who do not find the holidays restful, entertaining, inspiring, or otherwise positive. The complaints range from bad memories from dysfunctional family gatherings to disdain for the crass commercialism, to just plain cynicism.

While one could go through life, year after year, maintaining these attitudes, hating the season, and generally grumping along, there could be a happier and healthier way to spend the holidays.  Certainly memories of one unhappy season after another could foster negativity, but there are ways to reprogram maladaptive subconsciously programmed responses. One avenue would be to work with EFT or hypnosis (see Jane Hernandez article below).  Targeted flower essences and affirmations can enhance the shifts in consciousness brought about by the EFT work, with an end result of making the most of the present moment, rather than prejudging the present by the unpleasantries of the past.

The holiday commercialism IS increasingly crass, in your face, and bereft of meaning.  However, hanging out in crowded shopping malls, frenetic searching for bargain basement prices, and spending on unhealthy foods and obligatory gifts are all personal choices.  Caving to commercialism is not the only option.

You could choose from an abundance of personally meaningful gifting  and service opportunities...from supporting women's businesses in developing countries to Seva International's sight program (click here) to serving hot holiday meals to those in need to providing uplifting music at a care facility. Or challenge yourself to create new culinary traditions for yourself, your family and your friends... vegan, ethnic, home harvested, food as art...the possibilities are endless.

Choosing activities well, you may find satisfaction and even happiness.  Ultimately, though, there is more to it. The core of the holiday upset and agitation is that the deeper meaning of the holidays has been lost in our secular society.

Holidays are supposed to be holy days, days set aside for celebration of the sacred. Where does one find that sense of deep inner peace and communion with a force larger than oneself?   One answer to that question is addressed in a newly released film called "Finding Happiness."  The film is showing December 11th and 14th at the Aquarius Theatre in Palo Alto. We recommend it!

Protect Yourself During the Holidays With An Immune System IV Cocktail

 * * *

                  Marcel Hernandez, N.D.

Why do you suppose that January is traditionally one of the busiest months in our clinic?  If you guessed that it has something to do with the holidays, Bingo!

Starting at Thanksgiving and continuing through New Year's Day, most of us are subjected to larger amounts of alcohol, sugar and rich foods than are normally part of our pattern during the rest of the year.  Also, the holidays are an emotionally stressful time period for many people for many reasons.  Family gatherings, office parties, gift buying and giving angst, crass commercialism, noise, crowded shops, loneliness and other factors contribute to a stress overload that plays havoc with our immune systems.  So come January, opportunistic infections like colds, flus and other manifestations of compromised immune systems are rampant among our friends, family and patients.

Effects of too much holiday partying.

Yes, yes, affirmations you may make about having a healthy holiday season will help.  But you've got to be really strong to turn down a homemade maple pecan pumpkin scone or a glass of homemade, organic, reduced sugar, soy and dairy-free eggnog.  And how are you going to avoid raising your glass of peppermint schnapps to toast the health and happiness of your loved ones in 2014?  Most of us will crumble under the pressure at one point or several.  If you give in too much, we'll probably see you in January.

Nothing will prevent a major self-indulgent deviation in your lifestyle from compromising your immune system.  But why not shore up your immune system before the holidays to help prevent minor holiday indulgences from leaving you vulnerable?  The Immune Push Cocktail we offer at Pacific Naturopathic will help do just that.

The "Cocktail" contains selenium, calcium, magnesium, B vitamins and vitamin C in a base of sterile water.  Because it is given intravenously, the nutrients are immediately active and go right to the cells where they are needed.  This proven mixture of nutrients also is energizing, helping keep fatigue at bay.   Best of all, the cocktail takes less than 30 minutes to administer and has no side effects.

If it sounds like I am offering a way to escape reaping the consequences of your holiday naughtiness, I am not!  What I am saying is that all of us will be exposed to a variety of viruses during the holidays.  We will also be exposed to hard-to-resist opportunities to compromise our immune systems, leaving us vulnerable to these viruses.  When you have a vibrant, responsive immune system, not only are you less vulnerable to infection, but if you do get sick, the symptoms will be less severe and duration of illness will be shorter.

Intravenous nutrition may sound scary to many people.  Indeed, some of the patients we've treated with IV therapy came in for their first treatment with great apprehension and left with smiles on their faces.  Administering an IV is really a simple, safe, sterile and effective procedure when administered by a trained medical practitioner.

The Immune Push Cocktail takes about 30 minutes and costs $150.  One cocktail a week during the holidays will help most people.  If you are a person who often gets sick during the holidays, consider two cocktails a week.  For more information or to schedule an appointment, please phone the office at 650-917-1121.

Be Well.

Intravenous Nutritional Protocols

at Pacific Naturopathic

 * * *

Many disease states compromise the human gut's ability to adequately absorb nutrients like amino acids,
minerals, and vitamins.

* Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, ALS, and Multiple Sclerosis have been shown to greatly benefit from IV antioxidant protocols that help heal the inflammation in the brain often found with these diseases.

* Chronic fatigue states such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Brain Fog have mitochondrial energy deficits shown to be helped when specific natural supplements are given intravenously.

* Many immune system and detoxification functions can be improved with IV protocols.

* A number of cancers are very responsive to IV nutritional therapies which can be used to help treat cancer as well as to improve tolerance of conventional cancer treatments.

* Some treatments involve 1-3 hour drips and others are 30 minute treatments, depending on the nutrient mix and concentration being infused.

To name a few:

            IV Glutathione

            IV Alpha Lipoic Acid

            IV Vit C

            Amino Acid infusions

            Vitamin and Mineral drips

            Myers' Cocktail

Other Protocols for Energy and Immune System Function

We have a dedicated Infusion room that is relaxing and peaceful for all these therapies.

Dr. Marcel Hernandez has been trained in IV therapeutic protocols and will be offering treatments for those patients for whom treatments are appropriate and safe.

Phone now to get on the list for treatment consideration.  650-917-1121.  An initial 30-minute consultation and current blood test is required for existing patients.  A 90-minute first office call and blood test is required for new patients.  Space is limited to four people receiving treatments a day.

Health By Vaccination?

Connie Hernandez, N.D.

Shanti Rubenstone, MD

Just at the time that the stores ramp up for holiday sales, the Center for Disease Control ramps up their media blitz encouraging us all to roll up our sleeves for another round of flu shots.

Our phone at Pacific Naturopathic rings with questions as to whether or not we agree that that is the best plan to follow in order to maintain health through the season.

These questions place us in a difficult position, flu shots being considered standard of care by conventional medicine and the governmental powers that be. However, as most readers of this newsletter know, the opinions of conventional medicine versus those of complementary medicine are a little like the Protestants versus the Catholics.

Naturopathically, we do not advise flu shots. Flu shots have not been proven to be particularly effective.

A recent review of the literature by Northstar Nutritionals notes that the CDC itself says that the flu vaccine is about 60% effective. This implies that 6 out of 10 people who get the shot may not get the flu (whereas the other 4 might).  Research also indicates that only 2.7 out of every 100 even get the flu in the first place.   And a meta analysis of 31 studies over 44 years found that the vaccine stopped the flu for 1.5 of every 100 adults who took the shot. Not great odds.

Years ago, I worked for an insurance company that was insisting on flu shots for employees. I politely declined and set up a study matching vaccinated employees with employees who worked to optimize their immune systems. We then compared sick days.  The non-vaccinated employees won hands down. The vaccinated employees had many more sick days, starting with those who became sick after receiving the flu shot.  I admit that this was not a clean experiment. Those who worked to optimize their immune systems were eating a better diet, exercising more, and generally working to support their vital force. The vaccinated employees tended to be like many Americans, believing if they just took a shot or a pill they would be protected and wouldnt have to bother with all that healthy lifestyle business.

Rather than opting for a flu shot, we advise opting for a nutrient dense, low sugar diet and healthy lifestyle. Optimize your Vitamin D levels such that your serum 25 hydroxy vitamin D falls between 60 and 80. Take 1000 mg of Vitamin C three times daily. If you're not taking in colored fruits and vegetables, try adding 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of a liquid bioflavanoid syrup such as our VeryBerry or WinterBerry. Use a homeopathic flu prevention program. (We use Guna Flu). Support your immune system with thymic protein. (We use ProBoost). Wash your hands frequently. Gargle with salt water at night. And use the neti pot if you experience congestion.

If you do find yourself coming down with something, schedule an IV Myer's Cocktail to boost your energy and your immune system.

Or bake your spine and sweat out your illness in an infrared sauna. Viruses don't like high heat situations.

Enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season!

Healing Through Stillness

corrine 2

There is an infinite, clear space that we can touch as we sit silently in meditation where all else falls away except the present moment. When I reach this space, there is a feeling of emptiness, yet a great sense of aliveness as well. There is a heightened sensitivity of my body sensations and awareness of what is around me, a great expansiveness, flowing energy, and love.  There can also be an immense tenderness in the moment and a sense of something greater coming in and around me.

In this space, I am open and vulnerable and have a stillness and peace that overshadows everything. During this moment, I can also sense the possible pain of what is real inside my heart, yet still have a deep compassion and love for it. It can be such a paradoxical feeling - touching and sensing the great pain that is there, but at the same time having such a vast feeling of compassion and peace.

I often reach this space during my bodywork sessions as I am working with another person and feel a great sweetness, gentleness, and respect for this other human being that can overpower me. I feel a deep gratitude for this person allowing themselves to open to me, to be vulnerable, and I open myself to the energy that can flow through me to help aid each person's healing and restorative processes. It's a beautiful thing.

Dr. Sutherland, the father of cranial work, began talking more about reaching a deeper state of work in craniosacral therapy during the last period of his life, with the final words etched on his headstone saying, "Be still, and know."

As I become still, I can feel myself reaching this deeper state during my sessions, and I can begin to sense what is happening for my patients as well. They also often feel a change in themselves during and after sessions. There is a great reverence for me after reaching this space, and I find that I am humbled by these experiences - I realize I am just a vessel for facilitating healing for the person on the table. Ultimately, it is each person's inherent healing processes that restores them, and I am just helping to tap into that with craniosacral therapy and reiki. Assisting in quieting the body and mind allows for deep healing to take place, and this is essentially what we are trying to reach during each session.

  Happy Holiday Hypnosis

* * *

Jane Hernandez, CCHT

Jane 2013

As the holidays approach some of us begin to fill with dread while others go along with the jolly state of mind. Eventually we are surrounded and then the gaiety begins...some true, some false. We were touched by the world of the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" yet current holiday sentiments have been amped up so much that they no longer resemble the story of service to others as the greatest gift of living.  What it is now is buying stuff, partying, and excess. When it is over we are often left with bloated credit cards and excess body weight. What can we do about it?

People are often surprised to find that hypnotherapy and EFT (Tapping) can help them beat the holiday blues. Once you understand a bit about these healing therapies it all makes sense. A lot of what might be bringing you down is preconditioned responses from childhood events. In other words, bad memories that are locked in our subconscious. When we get the negative stimulus, the response is as automatic as pushing a button because, in some ways, it is. Ever wonder why you behave the same negative way even though you prepare yourself in advance and swear that this time it will be different? Well, many of your responses are programmed in your subconscious mind and it takes more than will power and resolve to overcome the behaviors.

Hypnotherapy talks to the subconscious mind, the place from where so many of your behaviors are run. Think of it as the puppet master. The way to really make changes is to start a dialogue with the subconscious and begin to take control. Eventually you can learn self-hypnosis and undo much of the programming that dictates your life now. Imagine the freedom and creativity you can unleash!

You can prepare now to prevent the stress and depression that can descend during the holidays. Learn to control holiday triggers like money pressures or personal demands, by dealing with them before they lead to a meltdown. With a little planning and some stress reduction, you can create peace and joy during the holidays. There is no reason that you shouldn't participate in the true spirit of the holiday season. Actually, it can be wonderful to be part of the fun and good spirits. Why feel so negative and excluded? There are alternatives such as those that Dr. Connie mentioned in her "Musings" and I'm sure there are even more in your own community. And then there is help in hypnotherapy and EFT that enables you to emerge to a renewed self, feeling better, more positive and with greater clarity.

What Does 'Healthy' Mean To You?

Nicole Noceto

Depending on who you ask, the word 'healthy' may take various forms in its meaning...

When I think of health, I think of balance. When I think of balance, I think of synergistic relationships amongst and between species, and also between species and their environment.   Furthermore, one who is interested in their own health would be inadvertently interested in the health of their planet, as the two are co-dependent on each other.

My academic education comes in the form of an Environmental Studies degree.  Subsequently, I have deep-seated interests in both the natural and social sciences having extensively researched issues including global climate change, conservation biology, environmental policy, sustainable consumption and production, and resource management.  The knowledge that I gained over the course of my studies has proven to be invaluable, as no matter what turns my career path might take, I will always understand the importance of co-existing with the ecosystems that surround me.  I will always understand the impact that I have on my environment, and also the impact that any one being may have on their environment.  I will always understand that we, humans, exist as an extension of Nature, and not separate from it.  This foundation has allowed me to realize that true health depends on the mutual respect between the natural and social realms; an idea that lends itself to sustainability.  Out of my passion for cultivating sustainability, first with a focus on environmental health, I have more recently begun to explore the notion of sustainability and human health.

In a very general sense, we can think of sustainability as the ability to continue, or be supported for a long time.  How is this any different from health?  Don't we all aim to be supported throughout life?  Don't we all strive to prolong our existence by leading healthy lives?  If health equals sustainability, and sustainability equals life force, than we as individuals should be much more accommodating of the desires of our Earth.  Over the course of relatively recent history, the development of the social world has been at the detrimental expense of the natural world.  Thus far, our fellow species has exercised little regard for maintaining the long-term health of our planet, which is obvious when we consider mass industrialization of agriculture, widespread deforestation, overutilization of finite resources, irresponsible distribution of harmful chemicals and pollutants, and sadly, the list goes on, and on, and on...

It seems to me that we have reached a critical point in history, where it is truly time to confront the ideals and institutions that have developed the unsustainable social realm in which we live.  The balance has been tipped in a direction unfavorable to sustaining life, and it's only a matter of time until we rectify the damage.  With technology, intelligence, and innovation more abundant than ever, sustainability IS the future - it has to be.  As human beings, we have the wherewithal to acquire knowledge and behave in ways that promote health and well-being.  We can choose not to support big agricultural companies who strip our food and land of any nutritional value; we can choose not to drive gas-guzzling vehicles that rapidly deplete finite resources while also polluting the air we breathe and the water we drink; we can act as responsible consumers and make ourselves aware of the chemicals that we put on our skin and in our bodies.

I hope that as the human race progresses, these concepts will become widely understood and embraced.  Sustainability will only be realized once health and happiness take precedent over money and consumerism.  We all have a role to play, choices to consider, and sacrifices to make when it comes to sustaining all life on, and of, our beautifully wondrous home - Earth!

Dr. Marcel's Pumpkin Pesto
(Surprisingly Yummy!)

* * *

One day, Dr. Connie and I were at a friend's house and we decided to make a meal with what we had in the fridge rather than go to the store to buy food.  They had a small pumpkin, and I had an inspiration that turned out absolutely, surprisingly creamy and yummy.

Small (1 to 2 lb.) kabocha (Japanese) pumpkin, cut into eighths, seeds removed, boiled until soft and mashed

4-5 cloves mashed or very finely minced garlic

very finely minced medium onion (a sweet onion would be ideal)

to 1/3 cup olive oil, more or less

juice of lemon

tsp hot sauce (only for depth, not to make it hot)

1/2 teaspoon turmeric

1/4 tsp cumin

salt and pepper

After kabocha is cooked, drain and put it into a colander, allowing it to cool for about hour.

Using a large serving spoon, dig out the pumpkin meat and discard the rind.

Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl, mash and blend well until creamy.  Garnish with cilantro or oregano leaves.  Keep in fridge, but serve close to room temperature with crackers, chips, baguette slices, fresh raw veggies or apple slices.

Guaranteed to be a hit at any gathering, so have the recipe ready.

ENJOY!

Breast  Thermograph
at Pacific Naturopathic
***
Measuring the temperature of the breasts

Normal thermog photo
Thermography is noninvasive and offers therapeutically useful information

It's almost always easier to prevent a condition from manifesting than it is to treat a condition once it has manifest in the body.  Though it is sometimes said that mammograms prevent breast cancer, they do not. Mammograms  are a screening test that can identify suspicious breast lesions after they occur...that is, once they have created an anatomic or structural change in the tissue of the breast.  Once lesions are discovered, breast biopsies are ordered to find out whether the lesions are benign or malignant. Early treatment of breast cancer is more successful than late treatment, but the most one could say in terms of prevention is that a late stage breast cancer has been prevented by treating an early stage breast cancer.

Breast thermography, on the other hand, has value in the prevention of breast cancer.  Breast thermography follows changes in physiology. These changes in physiology are represented both by temperature differentials between the breasts and by abnormal patterns of blood vessel distribution in either or both breasts.. Just as with the findings of mammograms, the findings from thermograms do not diagnose breast cancer. (The only diagnostic for breast cancer is breast biopsy).

We can, however, address abnormal heat and vasculature patterns, and we can observe whether these findings change in response to our treatment protocols. When we are able to decrease a high thermal risk rating or normalize vascular patterns, though we can not prove that we have reversed a developing breast cancer, we can understand that, at the very least, we have reversed a developing abnormal process. We call that preventive medicine.

The cost to you of breast thermography is $225.

In our ongoing efforts to serve our patients with the latest, most effective natural health approaches, we are delighted to share our excitement about or latest offerings with our readers...

Intravenous Nutritional Therapy

iv photoThis is a major addition not only to our services, but to our ability to secure dramatic, positive results with safe, effective therapies.

Here's how it works. We will need to see a comprehensive blood test not older than three months. If you have a recent blood test, you will need to have one more lab test, a G6PD, to rule out a genetic condition that is a contraindication for IV therapy.  If you do not have a recent comprehensive blood test, we can order it for you.

Next, you will need a short office visit before onset of treatments to determine if I.V. therapy is safe and appropriate for your needs.  Your unique personal protocol will be discussed with Pacific Naturopathic doctors and you can start IV therapy the same day as the office visit.

We offer a comfortable, quiet, peaceful atmosphere where you may read, work on your computer, listen to music or watch movies (with earphones), or just sit back and relax or nap. There is minimal discomfort.  You will be able to drive yourself to and from the appointment without any difficulty.

At first, we will only be able to accommodate a maximum of four people a day for treatments.  If you feel you may be helped with I.V. therapy, or would like to just explore the possibilities please phone to reserve your space soon.

Boston Heart Diagnostics has offered Pacific Naturopathic doctors an amazing deal on their Cardiac Risk Assessment blood test, at no out-of pocket cost to you!

Yes, what you read is true.  Standard blood lipid panels (cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, HDL) are not predictive of cardiovascular disease. The test we are offering includes proprietary advanced risk tests, and a comprehensive offering of lipid, lipoprotein, apolipoprotein, cardiometabolic, liver, kidney and genetic tests -- four pages of test results, plus a 54-page narrative discussing your results. And best of all, except for a $35 administrative fee,  there is no cost to you! How is this possible? What's the catch?  Click here to read about this extraordinary test.

Note:  You must be an established patient at Pacific Naturopathic and have health insurance for this special program. You must also have a diagnosable condition, like high cholesterol, cardiac abnormalities or a strong family history of heart disease for us to be able to order this test. Other low-cost options are available for those who do not have insurance. Unfortunately, we are unable to order this test for Medicare patients. The government does not yet allow naturopathic doctors to bill Medicare. A 60-minute return office call is required to discuss your results. The cost of the return office call is $180.

We are delighted to have found a far infrared sauna at a price most of us can afford.

Dr. Connie enjoys the sauna between patients

We have long owned two far infrared saunas -- one at our home here in the Bay Area and one at our Hawaii retreat.  They are both big, bulky wooden structures that dominate the space they are in.

We have reached an arrangement with the manufacturer to distribute a high tech, state of the art portable far infrared sauna for a very reasonable price -- just $995 plus tax.  Shipping is free!

Like to try one before you invest? Easy...we have one in our office specifically for you to try out at no cost.  Just give a call, 917-1121, to make sure the room is free.

There are many reasons why a sauna is one of the best investments you can make for your health.  Click here to read about why we think this is a deal just too good to pass up.
