ANNUAL MEETING & FALL PROGRAM - SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2nd, 3:00pm
Stone Walls of the UK & US: Comparison & Evolution by Andrew Pighills
FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC - Registration requested
In 1822, Peter Augustus Jay took down the wooden fences or "pales" on his father's land. He replaced them with stone "ha-ha" walls that you can still see today on the ground (and in aerial photos) framing the entire length of the Jay meadow and viewshed to Long Island Sound. These dry laid walls were based on similar landscape features found in countless English estates as well as at the homes of several Founding Fathers. Learn how this design element made its way from Great Britain to America in this unique talk by Andrew Pighills

Born in Yorkshire, England, Andrew Pighills is an accomplished stone artisan, gardener and horticulturist. He received his formal horticulture training with The Royal Horticultural Society and has spent
31 years creating gardens and building dry stone walls in his native England. Having moved to the United States more than ten years ago, he now continues this venerable craft here building dry stone walls, stone structures and creating gardens throughout New England and beyond. Andrew will draw comparisons in geology, building styles and techniques, and follow the development and evolution of stone walls and structures from colonial times to the present day, and explain how they fit into the garden and wider landscape past and present. Read more about Andrew here!

This event is FREE and will be opened with a brief overview of the year's accomplishments at JHC and a forecast of what's to come! Followed by refreshments. Pre-registration requested. RSVP here!
