Coming Full Circle
 Bill Sullivan - Back in the saddle at Brin.
Hi there and welcome to the October edition of our Heartland Glass newsletter!

Thanks for taking the time out of your day to catch up with what is happening with us.

October 3rd marked my return to where I started my career 32 years ago, Brin Glass Companies Corporate office at 2300 N. 2nd Street in Minneapolis. Brin was my first job out of college and little did I know then that I would stay with them for basically my entire career. It also illustrates what a great company it has been and continues to be through all of the opportunities it provides. I started out in customer service and then took a sales position. The opportunity as Branch General Manager of Heartland Glass in St. Cloud came next and then I moved back to Brin as Executive VP and now I have the role of President thanks to Heartland's official merger with Brin. When I interview new candidates thinking of a career with Brin, I use my own career path as an example of what could happen if they have the want and desire to achieve their goals!

This move to our current space at Brin didn't come without a few challenges.  First of all, we decided that the offices needed some "freshening up" before we re-located our contract division to the 2300 location. So we decided to reach out to our friends from Mohagen Architects and Greiner Construction to take on the task of remodeling our building. The other challenge was that our service division and corporate office staff would remain in place during the remodel -- well sort of. We had them move from the second floor to the first floor while the work upstairs was being completed. Imagine how that went over when we communicated the schedule to the staff!
I am happy to say they were very patient and didn't complain (at least not to me). At the suggestion of Mark Crowson, Contract Sales, we decided to host an ice breaker for the combined staffs at Brits Pub in Downtown Minneapolis for some lawn bowling. It provided an opportunity to meet some new faces and co-workers. It turned out great and everyone had a great time!

One of the initiatives that I have focused on in my return to Brin has been fostering a culture of collaboration between our various divisions and less of the competitive environment that used to be prevalent. Don't get me wrong, competition can be a good thing, but it can also set up road blocks that create barriers between organizations.
Heartland Glaziers, Nate Schindele and Jason Kramer hard at work on the new Brin office. Heartland had a couple of openings in their schedule so we were able to utilize four guys in Minneapolis for the week. Another example of collaboration!

What has really worked out has been the sharing of crews between our glazing departments. This allows us to keep our core group working longer and more efficiently and has resulted in fewer layoffs. One example of this recently was when we utilized crews from Heartland to help with the completion of the remodeling of our corporate office. These efforts have had a positive impact on our bottom line!

As we wrap up our third quarter, revenues are ahead of budget and ahead of last year's sales which is a testament to the hard work and effort our staff has been putting in. Our backlogs continue to be at historical highs. From the economic reports I am seeing, construction activity will continue to grow in 2017, albeit at a slower pace than 2016.

On an important side note, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month so be sure to love on the ladies in your life a little extra this time of the year. Many of us, including myself, have loved ones who have been affected by breast cancer and now is the perfect time to remember, honor and cherish them.

Thank you for taking time to read our newsletter, we appreciate the fact that you choose to work with us for your glass and glazing needs. Thank you!

Wishing you and your family and friends a safe and Happy Halloween!

Heartland Glass has a hand in back-to-back projects at Glacial Ridge Medical Center

The future face of medicine in Glenwood, MN at
Glacial Ridge Medical System

Heartland Glass has been partnering up with the Glacial Ridge Medical
Health System on a number of significant projects recently.

In late 2014 and early 2015, we worked with Glacial Ridge hospital on an expansion and remodel and just about two years later, we are hitting the bricks again for a project that will begin in 2017. "They are doing an addition over the top of the addition we just did!" said Garrity Gerber, Sales Director, "We are so grateful to get the contract to work with them again." The staggered construction schedule was necessary in order to keep the hospital fully functioning and accessible to patients.

According to the hospital administration, the number of local and regional patients using GRHS services has tripled in 10 years, leading to the need for the expansions now and for  the addition of future patients. There will be a total of 22 rooms plus a new maternity area and outreach area including cardiac rehab and neurology.

 The new patient care addition will feature products from Heartland including:
 *  Old Castle BE's FG-6000XT 2" x 6" Storefront and Rugged Wide Stile Entrances
* Art Glass from art files provided by the owner/architect will flow down the hallway

Take a look at this great live-link video of the jobsite. Make sure to click on the time-lapse window:

In between the contract time-frames for the hospital additions, Heartland Glass worked with Glacial Ridge to do a 50,000-square-foot nursing home and senior living complex called Ridgewood Villa.

The expansion included a two-story, 30-unit assisted living addition, a one-story addition of a wellness and fitness center, a 20-stall indoor parking area and a repurpose of the existing common use spaces to include new retail presence.

Some of Heartland's products used at  Ridgewood Villa include:
* Stanley automatic systems
* Tubelite wide stile entrance doors
* 2" x 4 ½" thermal storefront exterior
* 1 ¾" x 4 ½" non-thermal interior storefront

"The mirrored wall proved to be difficult to lay out with the notches around the windows and wall conditions were not perfect, but we made necessary adjustments to sizes for the mirrors to look outstanding," said Jessica Hansen, Heartland Glass Project Manager.

"There was a lot of coordination with  Stanley to ensure that all of the automatic safety doors that were installed for the deadlines went very well," Jessica said.

"We were able to work with the security contractor to ensure that all entrances were secured and accessible," Jessica said, "A few adjustments had to be made so that the sensor did not pick up parking lot traffic but it all worked out."

"Working with the McGough team, Danielle Johnson, Project Manager, Ryan Goodsen, Site Superintendent and Sean Neu Assistant Site Superintendent really made this project run smoothly and ultimately completed the project successfully," Jessica said.

"I think it speaks volumes when we continue to get work with an entity such as Glacial Ridge," Garrity said.

Thank you to Glacial Ridge Medical Center for continuing to partner with Heartland Glass on your changing landscape.

October Featured Employee
       Dave Koetter

Dave Koetter, shop foreman, fabricator.
Heartland Glass is very happy to honor Dave Koetter as our Employee of the Month for October.

Dave is a shop foreman and fabricator. He is a relatively new hire for Heartland.  "Dave's been with us through a temp agency since June, and is now a full-time Heartland employee," said Garrity Gerber, Sales Director.

"Dave is hard working and dedicated," Garrity said. "He has picked up the different products very quickly and takes notes of any mistakes not to make them twice.  For such a short time in the industry, the quality of his work is impeccable.  He has the shop better organized than we have been in the past, and we are the busiest we have ever been!"

Dave grew up in the St. Cloud area and graduated from St. Cloud Tech High School. He went on to St. Cloud Technical College and spent much of his career in the electronics field. A new career path brought him to Heartland Glass where he likes the challenge of working with a variety of products.

"Knowing that I'm part of a building that's being built or modified is rewarding for me," Dave said. "And I can say that I look forward to working with this group of people every day."

Dave and his wife Norma have been married for 31 years and have three children, Molly, Jennifer and Jamey and three grandchildren.  They live in the rural Avon, St. Joseph area where Dave enjoys woodworking, riding ATVs and spending time with their grandchildren.

We're honored to have Dave as part of our Heartland Glass team!

Heartland Glass is proud to partner with Andersen Windows for our clients' residential and commercial window needs.

The popular 100 Series window line has beauty and brawn. The budget-friendly series is engineered with a composite material called Fibrex®
which is superior to vinyl for its durability, sustainability and energy-efficiency. In fact, it is twice as strong as vinyl and provides low-maintenance exteriors with clean corners for a refined look.
Andersen recently announced a few changes to its 100 Series including the availability of black and dark bronze interior and exterior finishes, which lend to a high-class look without the high-class price. Also new to the series are six new hardware and finish styles plus the addition of contemporary charcoal-colored mesh on the screens (bye bye silver screens!).
