FEBRUARY BIRTHSTONE

Amethyst is the beautiful, deep purple gem for February. Amethyst is a type of quartz, primarily from South America. Feel lucky if this is your birthstone! Amethyst, like most other gems, has numerous legends and powers associated with it. It can protect you from self-deception and guard against guilty feelings. It can be a protection against witchcraft. It represents piety, humility, sincerity, and spiritual wisdom. It protects form poison, and focuses energy. The name comes from the Greek word, "amethystos," which means "not drunk." How did this connection come about? Legend has it that the maiden Amethystos was fleeing an enraged Dionysus, god of wine. She pleaded to Diana for help; to protect her, Diana turned her in to a pure, colorless quartz crystal. Dionysus, coming upon this, was so remorseful that he anointed her with his glass of wine, turning the crystal a deep purple. The best part of this legend? Wearing an amethyst is said to prevent intoxication. So drink a toast to your beautiful amethyst birthstone!

FRESH WATER PEARL VALUES

We continue to find outstanding values in freshwater pearls. The three colorful necklaces pictured here, 54" long, are priced at $95 each. They can be worn multiple ways, complimenting any outfit, and provide a fun, quality piece of jewelry that you can wear for years. Freshwater pearls are priced so well because there are so many more of them produced than the traditional Japanese saltwater pearls. They are grown in muscle shells; each mollusk can produce dozens of pearls at once, rather than the single pearls from the Japanese Akoya oysters. Whether for yourself or for your Valentine, these make a wonderful addition to a jewelry wardrobe.
