Your Industrial Cleaning Solutions News Source

This month we'll focus on costly waste streams and heat exchanger fouling, hopefully giving you guidance to removal and cost savings.
Heat Exchangers are  Prone to Fouling Unless Cleaned in Intervals

Fouling can have a major reduction in heat transfer.
The proper performance of shell and tube type heat exchangers within a process can affect the cost of the final product, or even the production rate. Fouling that appears on the heat transfer surface of a heat exchanger can cause additional resistance and the operational capability of the heat exchanger is reduced. It is then necessary to make some provision for periodic removal. There are a number of techniques for removal of fouling:  Mechanical Cleaning  (rotary brushing and scrapers) which is limited to the surface and should not be utilized on finned tubes. The use of  High Pressure Water Blasting/Lancing   is very common both inside and outside the tubes, though for the shell side, the waterjet will not be as effective deep inside a large tube bank. The application of Chemical Cleaning should be undertaken with the guidance of an expertise in the field. However, since chemical cleaning typically does not require removal nor disassembly of the piping, it is the most convenient of the cleaning techniques. Proper assessment of the conditions affecting each facility is crucial in choosing the correct course of action. PSI Industrial Solutions  works closely with our industrial and manufacturing customers to offer a comprehensive cleaning solution - taking into account: tube base metal compositions, base metal conditions, corrosion control, fouling agent, scale composition, cleaning window, and safety and environmental concerns.

Reducing Costly Waste Streams

Did you know that PSI has actually helps to minimize various waste streams that typically are earmarked for costly off-site transportation?

Each year, companies in the United States generate and dispose of 7.6  billion tons of non-hazardous industrial solid waste.  In light of rising
raw material and disposal costs, existing and pending regulatory  pressures and changing consumer preferences, companies in the  manufacturing and industrial sector are seeking ways to minimize their
waste streams and maximize their cost savings.

A large component of many manufacturers' waste streams is wastewater and industrial sludge. These materials are often costly to treat and dispose of or discharge. In order to minimize this element of the waste stream, manufacturers should consider ways to reduce the amount of water needed for manufacturing processes; gains in water efficiency also reduce costs associated with the purchase of fresh
water.

PSI can profile wastewater and industrial sludge, as well as establish a waste management plan to minimize the associated disposal costs. PSI helps manufacturers attain their waste minimization
goals, by contributing
toward organizational goals.
