Pastor's Letter

November 19, 2015
Dear Friends,
This Thursday we will sit down with friends and family over a meal that's tradition is rooted in the idea that we have a lot to be thankful for. For what are you thankful? Family and friends, enough food, adequate shelter, the ability to work, the trust that God loves us and is always with us, this church that gathers to worship, walk life's path with each other, and serve our community, for laughter and tears, for the gift of life, hope for the future, the possibilities each day offers?   The list goes on.
As people of faith, giving thanks isn't something we do just on Thanksgiving,; rather we are called to give thanks in all things. If we take seriously the phrase: in all things," that can be challenging. What does life look like if we truly give thanks in all things?
I look forward to worshiping with you this Sunday. Please be in prayer for the ways we can be a blessing to the neighbors around Buckhall UMC. Please pray for how God is calling you to be a blessing.
Yours in Christ,
Linda
PS - Registration for Bi-District Training Day (January 9th, 2016)   is available now. Please register by December 18th to receive the reduced registration rate.

Advent Series: Socks and Underwear
At Christmas we often dream of receiving the "perfect" gift, but many of us have experienced the reality of Socks and Underwear.   What if Christmas isn't about our expectations? What if Christmas isn't about what we get? Instead, Christmas is about what we give? What if we've been given is exactly what we need? Join us as we embrace the power of the true gifts of Christmas and their impact on our lives.

11/29 - An Unexpected Gift: The Gift of Hope
12/6 -   Gift Cards: The Gift of Joy (Holy Communion)
12/13 - A Gift Returned: The Gift of Love (also "Undie Sunday" )
12/20 - A Gift Received: The Gift of Peace

In keeping with the theme of "Socks and Underwear," Sunday, December 13th, is designated as: "Undie Sunday." On that Sunday, we ask that you bring in a package of new socks or underwear. The socks will be added to our winter version of "Kits for the Homeless." Any remaining packages of socks, along with the packages of underwear, will be taken to Rising Hope and other places for distribution among people who are homeless.

Worship Task Force Forming
As a part of the work we have been doing in understanding our mission field, its demographics, and how we best bless the people in our mission field (the area around our church), we are exploring the possibility of a different style of worship that would complement our existing traditional style. We will look at possibilities in its style, times of this worship service as well as the others, and even will explore a different day. This task force will be a working group. If you are interested, please know that you will be asked to:

  • Attend at least 2 worship services of a different style in the Alexandria or Arlington districts and report on your findings.
  • Become familiar with the demographics/psychographics/life-style trends of our mission field - information will be provided and discussed.
  • Be in prayer for at least 10 minutes each day about our mission field and how God is calling us to be a blessing and to be open to the leading of God's spirit.
  • Participate in the task force meetings. Date and time will be chosen by task force members.
The work and recommendations of this task force will then be presented to the congregation and church leaders for their input. If interested, please contact Pastor Linda at bumc.lmonroe@verizon.net
