ONE IN EIGHT WOMEN WILL BE DIAGNOSED WITH

BREAST CANCER IN JERUSALEM

v s . ONE IN NINE WOMEN IN CANADA

"Unfortunately, there are no clear guidelines for screening young women,"
according to Susan Bendahan, a breast care nurse at the Jack and Candee Klein
Comprehensive Breast Health Complex at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem.

"The guidelines recommend that women over age 40 with a family history of breast cancer, and women over 50 without a family history, be examined by a breast surgeon once a year. Women need to be breast aware and notice changes if they occur. This is especially true for women at higher risk. They need to be the most vigilant and should consult with a breast surgeon as to their personal risk and to determine how often they should be checked and how (i.e. manually by a breast surgeon, mammography, ultrasound, MRI, etc...)."

MASTERS OF DISASTER, IDF FIELD HOSPITAL

MAY BE RECOGNIZED AS WORLD'S BEST

World Health Organization considers giving Israel its highest rating for
emergency medical teams, something no other country has achieved

Israel's military field hospital, regularly dispatched to disaster zones to provide humanitarian relief - and to win the Jewish state some rare international brownie points - may soon be awarded the World Health Organization's highest ranking, which would make it the first in the world to be so recognized.

In 2013, the United Nation's WHO created a set of criteria to classify foreign medical teams in sudden onset disasters, on a scale from one to three. No country has yet to receive the top mark and "only a handful in the world could even think of" doing so, according to the lead author of the classification system, Dr. Ian Norton.

Last month, a WHO delegation visited Israel to assess the IDF Medical Corps' field hospital, a sprawling 26-tent structure, during a large-scale exercise in northern Israel to determine if Israel would indeed be the first to score a "Type 3," Lt. Col. (res.) Dr. Ofer Merin, commander of the field hospital and head of the trauma center at Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Medical Center, told The Times of Israel.

The field hospital is "not just some medics and doctors spread out in the field," but is a "national treasure" that has the capabilities of an advanced, permanent hospital, but can be set up almost anywhere in under 12 hours, Merin said.

'THE MARKER' STORY ON THE RISE OF SHAARE ZEDEK'S NEW NEUROLOGICAL CENTER

The Marker Newspaper, widely regarded as Israel's leading business daily, released a feature article today (Thursday, October 20th) detailing the rise of the new Neurological Center at Jerusalem's Shaare Zedek Medical Center through the hospital's acquisition of some of Israel's leading neurological specialists - primarily from Tel Aviv Medical Center (Ichilov). Ichilov has served as home to Israel's largest and most prestigious neurology center - allowing The Marker journalist, Roni Linder-Gantz, to describe the transition as a clear boom to Shaare Zedek.

In recent months, through the initiative of Shaare Zedek Director General Professor Jonathan Halevy, the hospital has recruited four senior physicians from Ichilov to staff the new center in Shaare Zedek. Included is Professor Natan Bornstein who is directing the Neurological Institute. Professor Bornstein had previously ran the Stroke Unit in Ichilov, and is widely regarded as one of Israel's most prominent specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of brain disease.

Also  coming  to Shaare Zedek from Ichilov is Dr. Nevo Margalit who serves as Director of the Department of Neurosurgery, Dr. Tal Shachar, an expert in Neurologi cal Oncology and Dr. Lior Gonen, who is currently on a fellowship in Canada and will shortly be returning to Israel where he will join the Shaare Zedek faculty. The team also includes other senior recruits - Dr. Roni Eichel who comes to Shaare Zedek from Hadassah Medical Center and is now Director of the Stroke Unit and Dr. Yaakov (Kobi) Amsalem directs the Interventional Radiology Unit, a position he previously held at Rambam Hospital in Haifa.

The article describes how Shaare Zedek's accomplishment in building such a prestigious team in a relatively short amount of time was made all the more urgent by the recent wave of terror, where the need for a comprehensive head trauma unit in the center of Jerusalem became increasingly urgent. "[Shaare Zedek] being granted the license to operate as a neurology center serves as a significant upgrade for the hospital and firmly establishes the Medical Center directly on par with all of Israel's leading hospitals."

Professor Halevy is quoted saying, "Once we made the decision to establish the center, I began the recruitment process to reach leading physicians in the field. We did not lure doctors with promises of higher salaries but rather we are able to offer them a supportive work environment with true professional satisfaction - factors that help attract doctors of this caliber."
