Volunteers Needed for Barnabas Center's
New Meal Pack Program

One of the most worrisome problems in our community is children who are experiencing food insecurity from not knowing where their next meal is coming from, due to transitional living, unstable housing or poverty. Barnabas' Meal Pack program wants to ensure that these children have food over the week-end when they do not have access to school meals. Our goal is to provide food for 250 children each Friday. We can accomplish this goal through the support of our weekly volunteers who help us fill the bags or to help deliver the completed bags to specific Nassau County Schools.
Food drives are also important to this effort as we need a steady supply of healthy, nutritious food to feed children. You can choose to help out one time, once a month or every Friday. You decide the level and length of time you want to help throughout the school year.
HOW TO HELP BARNABAS

  1. Help weigh and bag food 1 or more Fridays a month
  2. Deliver Meal Packs to specific schools in our community
  3. Make a financial donation to help support our program

Upcoming Empty Bowls Paint Parties
Who wants to express their creativity and have a lot of FUN in the process? Barnabas Center is holding 2 more bowl painting parties in September and October, and you're invited!
The bowls you'll be painting will be used to raise funds during our Empty Bowls event on Nov. 17th at the Atlantic Rec Center Auditorium.
The first painting party will be Sept 12th in our food pantry from 4-6 pm. All supplies will be provided. The second party will be Oct. 10th from 4-6 pm in our food pantry.
If you want to attend our Empty Bowls fundraiser, seat reservations are only $30 each, which includes a bowl of your choice, delicious soup and a new understanding of hunger in Nassau County. Sadly, 1 out of 6 people in our community don't know where their next meal is coming from. When you take part in our bowl painting parties or the fundraiser, you're doing YOUR part to combat hunger in Nassau County!
Empty Bowls Seat Reservations Available Now
Seat reservations are available for our 4th Annual Empty Bowls Event coming up November 17th at the Atlantic Rec Center Auditorium. This fun event begins at noon and runs until 1 pm. Besides selecting your own hand-painted bowl, as a memento additional bowls will be available for purchase. Tickets are only $30 each and your support will help us address hunger in Nassau County! 
Dog and Cat Food
Donations Needed
The Barnabas Center is in need of dog and cat food to provide to individuals and families with fur babies. If you can spare a bag of kibble or a few cans of food, please drop them off at our food pantry located at 1303 Jasmine St. Thank you!

  • 849 households were helped with food from our pantry

Your IRA Can Help Barnabas!

   There are many ways that you can help Barnabas connect our neighbors in need to help and hope- from volunteering to donating items to our New to You Resale Store. And, for our donors in their 70s-there's a way you can turn your IRA into a wonderful charitable gift with many lasting benefits - both for you and for Barnabas! 
   It's now permissible to contribute individual retirement account (IRA) assets to charity, free from federal taxes, annually. This continues to be good news because, prior to 2006, all lifetime distributions from IRAs were taxed, even those that were given to charity.
   The Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA) permitted individuals to roll over up to $100,000 from an IRA account directly to a qualifying charity without recognizing the assets transferred to the qualifying charity as income. Fortunately, in 2015, Congress passed an act to make this unique charitable giving opportunity permanent. Single and married individuals 70.5 and older are eligible to give in this way from their individual retirement accounts.
