Dear Friends,
It is sure hard to believe the amount of plants that have flown out of here so early in the growing season. I know that for many, the garden is a work of love. They love to be out in the sun planting, watering, and nurturing the plants until the fruits of their labor show and ripen, or bloom, or just grow like crazy. A beautiful garden is a prideful show of a dedicated, hard working person. ENJOY the fruits of your labor! This Friday, April 27th is National Arbor Day. In the day's honor, I want to share with you the advice below.
Advice from a tree: Stand tall and proud, Sink your roots into the earth, Be content with your natural beauty, Go out on a limb, Drink plenty of water, Remember your roots and Enjoy the view!

All About Birds
Ten Reasons Why People Fail to Attract Purple Martins
Over one million people maintain housing for Purple Martins. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of these folks successfully attract breeding martins. Below is a list of the top ten reasons why so many people fail. Your chances of attracting martins will greatly increase if you avoid making these common mistakes.
- Housing placed to close to tall trees or in yards that are too enclosed. There should be no trees taller than martin housing within 40 feet of it, preferably 60.
- Landlord allows other bird species to claim the housing first. These houses will rarely attract martins.
- Housing placed too far from human housing. Research has shown that martin housing placed more than 120 feet from human housing has a lower chance of being occupied. This is because martins have "learned" through natural selection that the closer they nest to man the safer they are from predators.

Mood Boosting Bacteria
Even if you don't love gardening, digging in the dirt may be good for your health----and it has nothing to do with a love of nature or the wonder of watching things grow. The secret may be in the dirt itself: a bacterium called Mycobacterium vaccae that acts like an antidepressant once it gets into your system.
That's right. A living organism that acts like a mood-booster on the human brain, increasing serotonin levels and making people feel happier.

Pookie's Scoop from the Coop
Hello Dear Readers!
Pookie here with all the latest news! The flock and I had a great time at Saturday's Earth Day celebration! Naturally, our favorite part was when all the customers came by the coop to say, "Hi!" I spent quite a bit of energy crowing for people to let them know how much we appreciated the visits and treats! Our second favorite part of the day was visiting the big grill and the hot dog guy. We were afraid they were going to run out of Nachos, but we were successful in getting a big plate full! We retreated to the coop for a leisurely lunch and were thrilled to discover that Chloe had opened up a jar of her famous hot salsa. My friends, this stuff is so hot that it would make a humans head burst into flames! We are trying to get her to share her secret recipe during Salsa Garden Saturday, but for now, her beak is sealed!
Now, my friends, a serious bit of news has come to my attention. This Saturday, it seems that the Nursery is hosting an event that features dogs! Yes, that is correct, dogs and not chickens!

Featured Adoptable Pet
Hello, My name is Zane. I am a really cute little 20 pound 1 year old boy. I am here with my sister, or maybe my mom, or maybe just my friend, I don't really know. We came in together and have been playmates for so long that I don't remember how we met. I am a cute fellow with black fur that seems to be chocolate in the sunlight. I am friendly and love to play a lot. As a matter of fact, I think I get Dizzy (my pen mate that I was telling you about) a little annoyed at me for wanting to play so much. I would like an active lifestyle as well as a calm and gentle one because I am a little shy. I am sure to be a real pleasant little dog to be around and will bring joy and happiness to the household. Please come to visit with me and take me home so that our good times together can begin right away!
See you, Zane
