A Message from CEO, Mike Balsamo

The month of April has produced some amazing networking opportunities for our members to attend. The BIA's Orange County Chapter had the privilege of hosting the 2017 Leadership Conference earlier this month. The sold-out event featured Sherry Lansing, Lisa Leslie, and Courtney Ferrell who each shared their story of overcoming common challenges in male dominated industries and successfully rising to the top. Member attendees were inspired by these women in leadership and even participated on stage and during Q&A.

BIASC's Home Builders Committee (HBC) successfully held its 28th Annual Design/Build Competition at Reliable Wholesale Lumber in Huntington Beach on Saturday, April 8th and Sunday, April 9th. The competition hosted twelve student teams from Southern California Youth Build divisions and North Orange County ROP  Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA) programs as they competed for the coveted Design/Build Competition champion. The mission of the two-day competition is to bring the future of the building industry together with today's professionals. Congratulations to La Habra High School for winning the competition and to all the schools that participated!

On behalf of the BIASC, HBC, and CHF, I would like to thank everyone who sponsored and participated in making this event happen. Special thanks to Randy Richards and the Reliable Wholesale Lumber team for hosting the event.

AB 199 update! I am pleased to report that on April 14th, CBIA officially changed our position on AB199 to neutral. Following negotiations with the bill sponsors, the residential exemption from prevailing wage except in the case of successor agency lands (former redevelopment areas). Special thanks to Michael Battaglia from CalAtlantic Homes and the CBIA advocacy team for their "all in" focus on this issue. Thanks to all our BIASC members that provided opposition letters and financial support to the campaign.
