A Message from BIASC's CEO

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the death of our leader and friend, Dave Cogdill. Dave Cogdill was the President and Chief Executive Officer of the California Building Industry Association and a former State Senator from the Modesto area. Dave was highly respected by his peers in Sacramento and he led CBIA with integrity and the utmost professionalism.  Just last year, in a noble demonstration of his commitment to those he served, Dave traveled up and down the State working tirelessly to lead CBIA toward the successful passage of Proposition 51, the School Bond.  Dave Cogdill was awarded the prestigious Profile in Courage Award from the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation in 2010 for his exemplary service to the community and state during the California budget crisis in 2009. Cogdill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Stephanie; his children, David Jr. and Meghan Merrell; and his grandchildren, Connor, Katie and Cooper.

We have a notable industry update on a major entitlement effort in LA County.  I would like to congratulate FivePoint Communities on the recent LA County Board of Supervisors approval of the first subdivision maps for the 21,500-unit Newhall Ranch development in the Santa Clarita Valley.  This long awaited master plan will bring desperately needed new housing to LA County.

BIASC members have spent the past month celebrating their successes and enjoying the summer sun. In June, BIASC's Alliance for Quality Construction Council (AQC) presented the 2017 Q Award to NBC Universal for its new Universal Studios Hollywood attraction The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ at the Globe Theatre in Universal City Studios.   Several of our members took home awards at the 54th Annual Gold Nugget Awards, presented by PCBC this year at the San Diego Convention Center. The awards recognized those who improve our communities through exceptional concepts in design, planning and development. Congratulations to KTGY Architecture + Planning who won 3 Gold Nugget Grand Awards and 8 Merit Awards, JZMK Partners who took home the Grand Award for Best International Site Plan, and to all of the other BIA Southern California members who were honored.  It was extremely gratifying to see four BIASC members enter the CHF Homebuilding Hall of Fame, Bob Yoder of Shea Homes, Paul Johnson of Rancho Mission Viejo, Lynn Jacobs (posthumously) of Ventura Affordable Homes, and Borre Winckel of BIA San Diego.

Our members have been maximizing the summer sun with a series of fun barbecues and mixers. Greater Sales & Marketing Council (GSMC) held their annual Summer Nights Mixer at Newport Dunes Beach Resort and the BIA Los Angeles/Ventura Chapter (BIA LAV) held a President's Summer Barbecue earlier this month. The Baldy View Chapter (BIA BV) held their annual BIA Backyard Barbecue at The Parkhouse - Ontario Ranch. As we move on into August BIASC members can look forward to more amazing events from each of our Chapters.

As you can see from the many networking opportunities and government affairs wins, BIASC works hard to benefit the members of the association. With that being said, BIASC is in the process of evaluating our membership dues for possible adjustment this fall/winter so we can continue to strengthen the association and to further service our members. Please stand by for more information on this. You can also contact myself or Denise Kennedy directly for more information.
