A Message from CEO, Mike Balsamo

Earlier this month, the Greater Los Angeles area held their county municipal elections. A few of the election's ballot items directly affected affordable housing for those residing in the Southern California region as well as the viability of the building industry. Fortunately, the citizens of Los Angeles voted "No" on Measure S, which would have imposed a building moratorium for two years on projects seeking General Plan amendments or zone height-district changes in the City of Los Angeles. The measure would have blocked the construction of desperately needed new housing - both market rate and affordable.

Last week myself and Michael Battaglia from CalAtlantic Homes traveled to Sacramento to participate in an assembly labor committee hearing on AB199. Joined by the 250 other BIA members from around the state, we testified in force about our firm opposition to this bill. AB199 would mandate prevailing wage on all residential construction in California. This would have a devastating and crippling effect on our industry. Housing costs would increase by an estimated 40% and further expand the affordability crisis.

BIASC members had some insightful discussions about the state of the industry at BIA Baldy View and BIA Riverside County Chapters' legislative luncheons. BIA Baldy View and BIA Los Angeles/Ventura County Chapters' Meet the Builder event on March 2nd, and BIA Orange County Chapter's General Membership Meeting yesterday also provided successful opportunities for our members to network and connect with the organization. Housing has become extremely relevant in the broader media market. BIA provides the best venue for you to stay informed.

On March 10th BIASC and California Housing Foundation (CHF)'s Celebrity Waiter event took place at the Turnip Rose in Newport Beach. The event benefits education programs such as the Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA)-a comprehensive, four-year high school trades program, providing students across California the training they need to enter the building workforce after graduation. This fun and hilarious charity dinner featured local building industry "celebrities" serving and entertaining their selected guests for the evening. Highlights from the evening included Shea Homes' Bob Yoder as President Donald Trump and Brookfield's Adrian Foley as Austin Powers!

I look forward to seeing our associations' members at BIA Los Angles/Ventura County Chapter's members-only Margarita March Madness event on March 23rd, BIASC's 3rd Annual Hockey event on March 30th, and BIA Orange County Chapter's incredibly popular Women's Conference on April 7th.

Enjoy the return of spring and daylight savings!

BIASC Homebuilders Honored With 2017 Eliant Awards

Eliant Homebuyers' Choice Awards  competition. The winning builders were chosen based on the results of more than 106,000 surveys which were administered to all recent home owners from over 156 major homebuilders across the U.S.

Sheryl Palmer of Taylor Morrison, Dave Kosco of Bassenian Lagoni join Non-profit's Board
HomeAid America, a building industry charity and one of the nation's largest builders of housing for the homeless, announced today that Sheryl Palmer, Taylor Morrison Homes' President and CEO, and Dave Kosco, Bassenian Lagoni Architect's Senior Principal and Director of Design, have joined their Board of Directors. Ms. Palmer will also be joining the Board's Executive Committee.

"We are extremely excited and fortunate to be adding two industry leaders like Sheryl Palmer and Dave Kosco to our Board of Directors," said Peter Simons, CEO of HomeAid America. "Sheryl is one of the leading homebuilder CEOs in the country and has led Taylor Morrison to great success during her tenure, during which the company has ramped up its involvement with a number of HomeAid's local chapters. The passion she has for our cause will now be taken to a national level at Taylor Morrison, and with her on both our Board and Executive Committee, we will greatly benefit from her leadership."

The 2017 Annual Design/Build Competition
The Annual Design/Build Competition brings tomorrow's builders and today's professionals together in a fast-paced, two-day build project that mimics the "real-world" pressures of inspections and deadlines while enforcing the values of safety, teamwork and craftsmanship. This year's HBC Design/build Competition will take place April 8th and 9th at Reliable Wholesale Lumber in Huntington Beach.
