DIFRET
A film based on the inspirational true story of a young Ethiopian girl who fought back against the
cultural tradition of bride kidnapping
Sie Film Center
2510 E. Colfax Ave. at Columbine St.
across from the Tattered Cover
Opens November 20th
From executive producer Angelina Jolie Pitt comes the award-winning drama Difret, based on the inspirational true story of a young Ethiopian girl and a tenacious lawyer embroiled in a life-or-death clash between cultural traditions and their country's advancement of equal rights. When 14-year-old Hirut is abducted in her rural village's tradition of kidnapping women for marriage, she fights back, accidentally killing her captor and intended husband. Local law demands a death sentence for Hirut, but Meaza, a tough and passionate lawyer from a women's legal aide practice, steps in to fight for her. With both Hirut's life and the future of the practice at stake, the two women must make their case for self-defense against one of Ethiopia's oldest and most deeply-rooted traditions. Difret paints a portrait of a country in a time of great transformation and the brave individuals ready to help shape it.

"Enchanting Yunnan" Trip to Kunming
a Huge Success

What a fantastic 12-day trip we had to Kunming in October!  Eight of us had the  adventure of a lifetime as official delegates to Denver Sister City of Kunming in Yunnan Province, southwest China. Kunming city officials and the Kunming Foreign  Language School welcomed us as honored guests as we met to discuss potential education, sports, music, tourism and other exchanges between the two cities. To  show the importance of our visit to Kunming, the local TV crew filmed our meeting with the Kunming Vice Mayor, which was followed by a formal multi-course dinner  with numerous friendship toasts. The value of our face-to-face meetings cannot be overestimated as we made many new friends.  We are excited to arrange new exchanges and activities to further strengthen our Sister City relationship.

The group also visited some of the beautiful sights near Kunming, such as the Stone Forest and the charming city of  Lijiang, and we dined on yak meat and other Tibetan delicacies in exotic Shangri-la.  Yunnan province is known for its rich ethnic  diversity and we enjoyed seeing the many native costumes, tasting the food, and  learning about their traditions. To round out our China experience, we visited the
country's two largest cities, Shanghai and Beijing, and made a side trip to the Great  Wall and a night cruise on Shanghai's Huangpu River.

It is easy to understand why some people go on as many Denver Sister City tours as  possible.  As part of the DSCI delegation, we had incredible experiences that other  tourist groups could never have. I can't wait to go back to Kunming!
