Volunteer of the Year
France Addington-Lee

France Addington-Lee and Jeanie Johnson
at the 2016 Annual Meeting

Even though she is a relatively new member of the Kunming Committee, France has made a significant impact on the success of  activities and events during 2015. She brought a high level of dedication, creativity, innovation, hard work, and professionalism to helping to advance the relationship between Denver and Kunming. As a relatively new member of the Committee, France has made significant contributions to all aspects of committee activities throughout the year and in particular  made a significant impact on the Silk Road event at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the Sports Delegation visit, and the delegation trip to Kunming.
-  Jeanie Johnson

Ten sophomores from Ramat HaNegev, Israel participated in an exchange with Denver Jewish Day School organized by Jewish Colorado.

"NATION-BUILDING AT THE WATER-MINING NEXUS:
CONTESTED INFRASTRUCTURE and MONGOLIA'S OYU TOLGOI COPPER-GOLD MINE"

The O yu Tolgoi copper-gold mine, located in Mongolia's
South Gobi province, has become a symbol of the promise of mining to revive Mongolia's struggling economy and to propel the nation into a new era of prosperity. But local nomadic herders continue to raise concerns about decreasing access to water resources and decision making.

Dr. Sara L. Jackson of Metropolitan State University of Denver argues that water infrastructure for mining symbolizes a movement of water away from previous visions of the nation and towards neoliberal nation-building that decentralizes the role of the state and prioritizes the water needs of private entities.

Dia de Los Muertos
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead,   is a holiday celebrated in our sister city of Cuernavaca and throughout Mexico and Latin America . Dia de los Muertos is a joyful tribute to friends and relatives who have passed away, celebrating their lives with food, drink, and parties. Dia de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, and on this day, the dead are again a part of the community, awakened from their eternal sleep to share in celebrations with loved ones.
