Some Lakes Open for Spring Spearing
Despite the wild weather this past week, some of our lakes have been declared open for the spring walleye harvest. Which lakes are open and other important information regarding the permits available will be added daily to the announcement board which is now located at the Niiwin House on Sand Lake Road.
Don't forget to always have your Tribal ID with you while on the lake. Please follow safe boating guidelines.

Tribal AmeriCorps Worker Receives Award
Kim Soldier, a Tribal AmeriCorps worker in the Economic Support Family Service building, recently received an award presented by Jill Krueger, Chairman of the Community Coalition of Forest County (CCFC).
The CCFC is a group of community leaders from Forest County that meet monthly to address issues that may affect our all of our communities.
CCFC membership includes Tribal Leaders, County Social Services, AmeriCorps workers, Law Enforcement, UW Extension representatives, educators and concerned residents. Kim received the award from the CCFC for her involvement and positive impact in the community as a Tribal AmeriCorps representative.
"As a member of the Tribal Council, I am very proud of the work that Kim is doing for our community," Ronald Quade, Tribal Secretary, said. "In a very short period of time, Kim has made her presence known as someone who will address any community issues head on and work diligently to improve the lives of our youth."
Kim received this award along with a bouquet of flowers on April 11th at the monthly CCFC meeting.
Congratulations Kim on your hard work and dedication to our community!

Stepping On Program
S
tepping On
is a workshop offered in Mole Lake by Sokaogon Chippewa Community. The workshop aims to help older adults prevent falls, and lasts for two hours, once a week, for seven weeks.
Classes will be held at the SCC Elder Complex every Wednesday
April 19th through May 31st from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.
Stepping On
will help participants identify why they fall and different ways to prevent falls, including strength and balance exercises, home safety check suggestions and a medication review. Participants will view a display of falls prevention products. The workshop is both for people who have fallen and for people who fear falling. Participants will leave with more strength, achieve better balance, and experience a feeling of confidence and independence as a result of performing various exercises and sharing personal falls experiences as a group.
The program was developed by Dr. Lindy Clemson of Sydney, Australia, to help older adults learn ways to prevent falls. It was brought to the United States by Dr. Jane Mahoney, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging, with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and other partners. The research has found that people who complete the workshop have a 31% reduced rate of falls.

Burning Permits Required
The Environmental Department is urging residents to stop in the office and obtain their FREE burning permits, which are required before any kind of burning takes place.

Cultural Committee Seeks Members
The Sokaogon Chippewa Tribal Historic Preservation Office would like to develop a Cultural Committee to help review projects on the reservation, to educate the public on history and cultural traditions and for much more! If you have a background in, knowledge of, or an interest in Cultural or Historic Preservation, please sign up.
The committee will consist of 10 Tribal Members from the Sokaogon Chippewa Tribe and will meet bi-monthly or as requested by the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. Members will be compensated for their participation. Trainings on Historic Preservation will be offered when necessary.

Crandon Post Prom Looking for Donations
Once again, parents of Crandon High school students have joined forced to provide a fun-filled prom night for our students.
Our goal is to have a night of laughter and fun by providing a safe, chaperoned and alcohol-free event. To do this we need your help. Donations of merchandise, gift certificates, or money will be greatly appreciated.
Prom will be Saturday, April 29th. The post prom party will be held at the Crandon High School following the prom from 11:00 pm until 2:00 am. We will be providing music, food, soda, games and many great prizes.
Last year over 150 students attended and it was a huge success, thanks to you! We hope we can count on your continued support and contributions this year. Thank you for your support, because without you, we could not make this happen.

Rise Together Event on April 19th
On April 19th, the
Rise Together
event will take place at the Crandon School District for Middle and High School students.
The Middle School presentation will be held from
9:00 to 11:00 am, and the High School presentation from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
We will also have
Rise Together
in the evening for our community, combined with our monthly Sobriety Feast. The evening event will take place at the Mole Lake Conference Center starting at 4:30 pm, and is open to all community members. Parents as well as children are encouraged to come and enjoy!

WIEA Scholarship Opportunities
In keeping with its continuing commitment to higher education, the Wisconsin Indian Education Association is pleased to provide scholarship assistance to American Indian students attending institutes of higher education for the 2017- 2018 academic year. This scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship, not based on financial need.
The scholarship is open to the following:
- 2017 Graduating High School Seniors
- One to Two-Year Program Students
- Four-Year College Students (second semester freshman, sophomore, junior or senior)
- Graduate or Ph.D. Students
These are merit-based scholarships requiring the students to write an essay and be above average academically. To date, 35 Wisconsin Indian Students have been awarded WIEA scholarships.

Tribal Administration Hours
The Tribal Administration office hours are Monday through Thursday from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Offices close for lunch from Noon to 1:00 pm. Offices are closed on Friday.

Tribal Enrollment Hours
The Tribal Enrollment office is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to Noon, and 1:00 to 4:30 pm. The Tribal Enrollment Office issues Tribal ID cards for on and off reservation Tribal Members.

Recycling Center Hours
The Recycling Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.
The Center is also open Saturday and Sunday from 12:15 to 3:45 pm.
