Broom House Farm - September Events, News and Vouchers
Hello everybody,
September has brought sunshine, showers and school visitors...the schoolchildren have had fun collecting apples in the orchard...some for the Coffee Shop and some for the pigs! We're busy planning winter events - see below. In the meantime call up to the farm to enjoy a coffee and the gorgeous autumn colours in the hedgerows; there are plenty of sloes, blackberries and other Autumn treats on offer along our footpaths...and a new dragon to find in the Forest. Hopefully you'll find this new format works well on your phones.
Farming News
It's the time of year for selling surplus steers, heifers and Lleyn ewe lambs. Once these have gone it will ease the pressure on the grazing land. As usual much of the month has been spent sorting out sheep. Lambs have been split into batches according to size, most fat lambs have been sold to Waitrose this year. The main ewe flock has been through the pens and breeding ewes are being tailed and condition scores checked (sorted into fatter and skinnier) in readiness for tupping. After much agonising some new breeding has been introduced with the purchase of some Innovis tups. We had one of our traffic mornings yesterday - bringing the gimmers (one year old female sheep) back a mile along the road from Burnhope fields. We do this at weekends and at first light; with a landrover, 3 quad-bikes, 4 people, 1 Huntaway dog and lots of high-vis jackets and flashing lights. Sorry if we held you up.
The next main job is to scan the cows, this is another exercise in logistics as the calves have to be split off before the cows can go through the cattle race. It takes 2 days to get through the herd...and it is very tense. The organic inspection at the end of last month was also a bit tense but went smoothly, the farm has now been fully organic for 10 years. The next excitement is the arrival of our beehives, which will be positioned in the orchard.
