September 2016
A great month for MANUFACTURING 2000
students!
MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K)  offers free training and placement assistance to help trainees begin their manufacturing careers as machine operators or entry-level machinists. This past month, 5 students were placed into machinist positions! We are looking forward to "Jobtober" next month, and hope to double our placements.

Collaboration is the Heart of Innovation
New Century Careers and Community Kitchen Pittsburgh work together to problem solve.
From  Katie DelVerne, New Century Careers
           Katie Schratz, Community Kitchen Pittsburgh

Last week Community Kitchen Pittsburgh (CKP) was faced with a dilemma.  One of their meat slicers was not working due to a stripped metal piece, and needed a custom part. To overcome this challenge, CKP collaborated with New Century Careers (NCC), a manufacturing workforce development and training organization.

After a brainstorming session and a few hours on the machines, 3 of NCC’s MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) machining students and their instructor designed and executed a plan to create a custom piece for the slicer. The newly designed metal part allowed CKP’s team to be more efficient, but more than that, allowed them to do more with in-house fresh cooked meals. Finding a solution and producing the metal piece also gave NCC’s M2K students the opportunity to use their problem-solving skills and manufacture a working part.

About Community Kitchen Pittsburgh
Community Kitchen Pittsburgh (CKP) operates a culinary training program geared toward adults with barriers to employment, followed by job placement and retention support. The training is fully integrated into the daily operations of CKP’s multifaceted food service lines, which not only provide revenue support for our programming, but also immersive, on-the-job training experience for trainees. Success is her Middle Name
Jessica Gutshall
With no previous knowledge of machining or manufacturing, Jessica enrolled in our MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) class in September 2015. She enjoyed working with her hands, and the class seemed like the perfect match. After 6 months of training, Jessica secured a position at Aerotech. Since then, she has received 2 promotions and 2 pay raises. During advanced placement testing for NTMA apprenticeship, she placed out of both Year 1 and 2. This fall she will begin her journey as a Year 3 NTMA apprentice while continuing to work at Aerotech and raise her children.

NTMA Apprenticeship
