Summer_s Cauldron

"Summer's Cauldron"
Sermon by Rev. Aaron McEmrys, Senior Minister

It's amazing how things grow in the summer. A kind of feverish abundance takes over that can be both exhilarating and enervating. In this way seasons of growth in our lives can be almost as challenging as seasons of fallow. What to do with all this *life*?

Live-streaming of the service is at www.uucava.org.

Not able to make Sunday's service?
You can catch the service live beginning at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday on our church website at  www.uucava.org. To watch recordings of past services 24/7, click on the "Archives" tab -- THEN at the bottom of the video video slide the bar to the right to view the video list.

Designing Worship at UUMN
By Bea Ann Phillips, Director of Children, Youth and SHINE Choirs
Bea Ann Phillips photo I have just returned from the UUMN (Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network) conference, an annual gathering of 250+ UU musicians from around the country and Canada, feeling inspired and enthusiastic about the new church year at UUCA. I attend this conference every year, where I learn exciting new choral techniques, fabulous new music, and fresh ideas about how to use music to connect with one another, to grow as individuals and as a faith community, and to serve our congregation within - and the communities outside - our walls.

This year's conference, held at First Unitarian Society in Madison Wisconsin, focused on collaborative worship design -- how to intentionally design worship with music to enhance the worship experience for our congregations. The Worship Design Team -- selected through application -- included a minister, a music director, a religious educator and a lay leader. I was thrilled to learn that our own Rev. Aaron was selected to be part of this team!
Spreading the Love
Namaste card Have you picked up the latest Heart Balm cards yet? These little cards have messages of love, hope, and compassion printed over beautiful images that help convey the messages. The images were painted by UUCA artist Meika Ungricht. The cards are meant for handing out -- to spread the message of love -- a message our world needs to hear more than ever. You can certainly share them with those that are close to you, but please also pass them out to that stranger passing by -- or leave a few in the doctor's waiting room or leave with your tip at the restaurant -- you get the idea. It's a simple act love that sends a powerful message.
Water reminder
Gathering of the Waters Service - September 11
UUCA's two service schedule returns on Sunday, September 11, at 9:15 and 11:15 a.m., when we celebrate the Gathering of the Waters service.

Give-the-PlateGivePlate
ASPAN, ALIVE!, AFAC
Give Now
For the first three Sundays in August, UUCA's entire offering will be shared equally among three area agencies who feed the poor, house the homeless, and offer support to families at risk. UUCA has a long history of supporting ALIVE! (ALexandrians InVolved Ecumenically), ASPAN (Arlington Street People's Assistance Network), and AFAC (Arlington Food Assistance Center).

ALIVE_ logo UUCA liaison Ann Marie Hay writes that like many human services agencies taking care of growing needs, "ALIVE! is facing a tough year financially so this is very welcome. It's hard to reconcile the real needs people have with all the money being spent on campaigns this year."

ASPAN LOGO Our liaison with ASPAN, Ken Perkins-Gough, reminds us, "In our brutal summer weather not only do contributions decline, but the plight of the homeless who want nothing to do with a shelter intensifies."

AFAC logo And, our AFAC liason Denise Kappler sends us this message: "Thanks for keeping these groups in mind. The need is always there and Give the Plate is a wonderful way for us to show our support."

On Sunday, stop by the GTP table to find out more about how we can support these agencies.
July GTP - Thank you!
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Give the Plate in July. Your generous donations totaled $5,882 and will help support our ministry of a "Church Without Walls" -- as it will allow UUCA to continue to offer the use of our Center space to non-profit groups free-of-charge.
Attention Back-to-School Shoppers
AmazonSmile logo If you are using Amazon.com for any of your back-to-school shopping (or any other shopping), please be sure to go through the AmazonSmile program and choose "Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington" as the charitable organization. The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate to the church 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible purchases. Please note, these donations are not tax deductible and not part of your annual pledge.

Telling our story . . . Track it forward
Happy Wednesday everyone! The summer is flying by and we are getting closer to an exciting new church year. One of the things I am really excited about is celebrating all of the activities that this community engages in each and every week. Over the past several months, a few people have been utilizing a pilot application to track volunteer time. The feedback has been great and we have decided to move forward using this during the next year. The platform is called "Track it Forward". This technology will enable everyone who volunteers to record their time and activities. We can tell the story of the wonderful things happening here in our community!

Let me give you an example. We currently have 34 volunteers registered. Out of those 34, since February there have been 492.5 hours reported. If we calculated this value it would be $12,849.33 (based on Virginia wage values given by www.independentsector.org/volunteer_time).

Dishwasher Training -  Sunday, August 14
Want to learn how to use the UUCA dishwasher? Facilities Manager Paul Kearney will teach all the ins and outs of the commercial dishwasher in the main kitchen following the service. You will be able to help our Green Sanctuary goals by using non-disposable mugs for Sunday mornings and for other church events.
Covenant Groups - Beginning Soon!
UUCA's strong commitment to small group ministry has enriched hundreds of lives through our Covenant Groups. These small groups of 8 to 12, meet regularly throughout the church year and are led by trained facilitators. UUCA's Covenant Groups offers you the chance to connect, grow deeper, and offer service back to the community. Newer UUCAers form meaningful connections with others; longtime members enjoy exploring new learnings and deepening relationships.

Last year, many of our groups followed a series called Soul Matters. Rev. McEmrys' sermons follow the themes, and the readings, resources, and spiritual exercises are made available to UUCA's Soul Matters Covenant Groups. Other Covenant Groups follow their own readings or themes.

Online registration begins September 1. A registration table will be in Fellowship Hall after the services on September 11 and 18.
Covenant Group Facilitators Needed
We are accepting applications for Covenant Group facilitators for the new church year. Training is provided by the ministers. If you are interested, please contact [email protected].

We'd love to see you there.

Come From Away - Tuesday, Sept. 6, 7:30 p.m.
Come From Away On 9/11, over 6,000 people had to land in a small Canadian town of about that size due to the closing of all the airports in the states. The whole town had to come together to feed and house these people from all over the world. Ford's Theatre is presenting Come From Away, a musical based on the experience of this town. Come From Away honors the better angels of our nature, revealing hope and humanity in a time of darkness. The performance on September 6 is Interfaith Night and there will be a post-show discussion on Welcoming the Stranger. UUCA's Connectors and Sunday Morning Ambassadors invite you to attend at the group rate of $20 per person. To receive this rate, payment must be made to UUCA by August 15. Please contact [email protected].

DIG Meeting Aug. 17  |  Next Workday August 27
Bob Blinn photoA huge THANKS to Bob Blinn (pictured) and Jennifer Frum -- two of our intrepid DIG (Do It Green) Team members who beat the heat early this morning when participating in today's workday. To encourage the growth of more native plants, they patiently pulled invasives  throughout the property. Regular workdays are held on the second Thursday and fourth Saturday of each month -- between 9 and 11 a.m. during the summer.  The next workday is on Saturday, August 27. It's a great opportunity to work with your hands and truly touch the earth. Church groups and families are welcome. If you are interested in grounds planning or sharing your ideas, please plan on attending their next meeting on Wednesday, August 17, 3 p.m. in the Volunteer Room. For more information, please contact Jennifer Frum at [email protected].

Dr. William Barber, North Carolina NAACP President, who gave one of the most memorable speeches at the Democratic Convention, will be in Washington at the end of the month bringing the Moral Revival message to our national leaders. Ave., SE, DC, on Sunday, August 28, 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Rev. Linda urges everyone not to miss this opportunity to join her for an experience not to be missed. If you'd like to join those who have already signed on to attend, contact [email protected] today!  We're organizing carpools - and may even rent a bus if enough of us decide to go!

Finding Common Ground to End Gun Violence - Sat., Sept. 17, 6-8:30 p.m.
Gun owners and non-gun owners to share your stories with Virginia legislators
More than 10 Virginia legislators have already committed to attending, with many more replies still to come, at this event to be held at the UU Congregation of Fairfax. Let's break the stereotypes that usually accompany the labels "gun owner" and "non-gun owner" and find the common ground that will end gun violence. Come share a potluck dinner and tell your story about what has shaped your views on guns. You'll be seated with others from your ZIP code and your representative in the Virginia Senate or General Assembly. UUCAers are going, and invite others to join them. RSVP to Mary Lareau [email protected]. If you can't make it, but would like to learn more about what UUCA is working on to end gun violence, contact Annie Parker ( [email protected]). Location of Sept. 17 event:  Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax 2709 Hunter Mill Road, Oakton, Va.
