Herefords Headline Denver
Hereford excitement abounded from the Yards to the Hill at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) Jan. 15-18 in Denver. A total of 632 Herefords were exhibited throughout the three-day event. There was 328 head in the open show, 120 in the junior show, 31 pens of bulls, 17 heifer pens and four carloads. For complete results visit Hereford.org.

Mile High Night Sale Grosses $1.1 million
In the second year in its new venue, the Mile High Night Hereford Sale upped the ante again. The sale is a highlight of the NWSS in Denver and this year it was Jan. 17 and again on the stadium floor. The sale continues to astonish, as this was the second year in a row the gross sales nearly doubled.
The crowd was record-setting with some saying it was the largest crowd they’d ever seen at a cattle sale. An estimated 5,000 people were in attendance.
The Hereford offering, as always, was elite. The bull average was up $8,000 to $55,043 and 31.5 females commanded $15,749 per head, which is more than $5,000 above last year. The average on five flushes was $10,550, which jumped 63% over last year’s. And the average price of embryos more than tripled, with 12 embryos bringing a whopping $3,000 average.
The Mile High Sale has been managed for the past 12 years by Eddie and Ruth Sims, National Cattle Services. They have brought this sale out of the dust to the level of envy among all breeds in Denver. A big thanks goes to the both of them as they retire as sale managers.
$136,500 Raised to Benefit HYFA
Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho; GKB Cattle, Waxahachie, Texas; Bar One Ranch, Eugene, Ore.; and Elm Tree Farms, Paris, Ky., generously bid $125,000 for the foundation female to benefit the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA).
Gary and Kathy Buchholz, Waxahachie, Texas, donated GKB 8144 Notice Me Too B19 ET to sell as Lot 1, the foundation female, during the Mile High Night Sale during the National Western Stock Show in Denver. GKB Notice Me Too is an exceptional January 2011 daughter of BR Currency 8144 ET that sold bred to NJW 98S R117 Ribeye 88X ET.
The Dave McMahon family of Belle Point Ranch, Lavaca, Ark., paid $11,500 for the pick of the P&R Herefords, Leedey, Okla., 2014 heifer calves. P&R Herefords graciously donated that “pick” as Lot 19 in the Mile High Night Sale to benefit HYFA.
Fawcett Honored as Hereford Herdsman of the Year
Daniel Fawcett, Ree Heights, S.D., was selected as the 2014 Hereford Herdsman of the Year at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver. Daniel was selected for the award by his peers — other Hereford herdsmen and breeders — and was honored prior to the selection of the supreme champion Hereford on Jan. 18.
Daniel has been active in the cattle industry since birth. He grew up showing cattle and is still very involved with the show steers and heifers on the family ranch, Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch in Ree Heights.
He is the primary manager of the family’s registered cow herd, responsible for the bred heifer development program and the breeding program, which includes AI (artificial insemination) and embryo transfer.
Daniel and his wife, Kari, have two children: Hollis, 4, and Ivy, 2.

Dvorak Herefords Donates Heifer to Rancher Relief
Dvorak Herefords, Lake Andes, S.D., donated a heifer to the Black Hills Stock Show Hereford Sale Feb. 5 in Rapid City, S.D., to benefit the Rancher Relief Fund. More Than Angus-Sired
Real-world research utilizing Hereford bulls has led to documented real-world results in baldie female demand compared to straight-bred Angus females.
During the recent Circle A Ranch Sale Oct. 19, 29 black-baldie heifers averaged $2,960, and the top-selling lot was black-baldie heifers bred with heifer-calf-confirmed pregnancies at $3,450 each. The average price paid for the 269 straight-bred Angus heifers was $2,431. That’s a Hereford-sired advantage of $529 per head in price.
In 2007 Circle A Ranch, Iberia, Mo., began a research project with the American Hereford Association (AHA) designed to determine and measure the advantages of using Hereford genetics on commercial Angus cows.
Results from the project documented the Hereford efficiency advantage with a 7% increase in conception rate along with improved feed efficiency and average daily gain. Utilizing the Circle A data, economist Vern Pierce developed an economic model which projected that over a 10-year period, using Hereford bulls on Angus-based females would add $514 net over the life of a cow or approximately $51 per cow per year to a rancher’s bottom line.
Now, six years later, Circle A is still using Hereford genetics and having great success. Circle A’s Nick Hammett says that since the completion of the research project, the ranch has purchased four Hereford bulls that it is utilizing natural service and collecting for artificial insemination.
The Hereford bulls are mated to Angus cows, and the resulting heifers are highly sought-after. Each fall Circle A Ranch offers bred replacement heifers in its production sale, and in recent years, the Hereford-sired heifers have been topping the sale.
Hammett says the Circle A Ranch staff plans to continue using Hereford bulls: “We will keep using Hereford genetics. If they keep selling like this, it’s a win-win for us. We harvest all the steer progeny, and the F1 females sell really well.”

The National Hereford Women has a board position open representing the Northwest area.This is a four-year term. The northwest region includes: Washington, Oregon, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana.
A board member nominee must be of current paid status (as of 7-21-13). The duties of an NHW board member are centered on the promotion of our Hereford youth. Association updates
Just a reminder: The American Hereford Association (AHA) has approved two rule changes and an increase in fees.
- Rule 17A: new embryo transfer policy — For embryo transfer (ET) calves there will no longer be an ET certificate required for registration. The new requirement for registering an ET calf will be the reporting of the recovery date of the embryo at the time of flush. As previously, ET calves are charged an additional $10 per head over and above the normal registry rate (same cost as an ET certificate). This change is effective Nov. 1, 2013.
- Steers need registration papers — Starting in 2014 all steers showing at the Junior National Hereford Expo must be registered by the American Hereford Association and out of a registered sire and dam. No steer certificates will be accepted, only registration papers. The AHA will still offer traditional steer certificates for those state and regional shows not requiring a registration paper on steers at this time.
- New registration and enrollment fees — Starting Jan. 1, 2014, registration fees will increase 50 cents per head and Total Performance Records (TPR) cow herd enrollment fees will increase by 50 cents.
