A Second Opinion Could Save You Thousands!
The Heritage Home Program is known for its fixed-rate, low interest loans and its free technical assistance, often accompanied by a site visit to the house. Technical assistance can range from color consultations to project prioritization, but one of our underestimated technical services is the impartial review of contractor bids. If you are considering having work done on your home and have multiple bids, or even just one, it can be overwhelming to make the decision on a contractor. Just asking for our expertise in reviewing a bid could save you thousands of dollars on your project.

In August 2015, Dean Pavlik, construction specialist, went on a site visit that ended up saving the homeowner quite a lot of money. The owner had already collected bids on the work she wanted done to her home. The cost of the job, as it was bid to her, was so great that she was considering applying for a Heritage Home Program loan to pay for the work.

As program policy requires, Dean went on site to look at the property. From the exterior, he gave the homeowner his opinion on what work needed to be done to prevent water from infiltrating the home and an educated guess of how much it should cost.

After speaking with Dean, the homeowner decided to show him the quotes she had received. The quotes were for basement waterproofing. This particular home was built on a slab and had no basement! The quotes showed a much larger project than Dean had prescribed, at ten times the cost he had estimated. By receiving a second opinion, this homeowner potentially saved thousands of dollars in unnecessary home repairs.

Technical assistance and site visits are free to homeowners living in participating communities. They are also available to homeowners in non-participating communities for a modest fee. A second opinion that saves you thousands is always worth the extra time!
